What is taekwondo?
Taekwondo is Korea's martial art of kicking — spinning, jumping head kicks scoring highest — and an Olympic sport since Sydney 2000. It is among the most widely practiced martial arts on Earth, with World Taekwondo governing the Olympic sport and the Kukkiwon issuing the dan ranks recognized worldwide.[1] [2]
How does taekwondo work?
Three two-minute rounds on an octagonal mat, scored by electronic sensors in the trunk protector and headgear plus judges' calls for technical merit — a system, with instant video review, that made the sport's scoring unusually transparent. The WT Grand Prix series and world rankings drive Olympic qualification; poomsae (forms) runs as a parallel competitive discipline.[2] [3]
Where is taekwondo strong?
South Korea is its origin and a perennial power, but the sport is genuinely global — Olympic golds have gone to Serbia, Croatia, Great Britain, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Iran, Turkey, Mexico, Côte d'Ivoire and Niger, and WT's refugee and development programs have made it a case study in reaching new nations.[2] [4]
How is taekwondo awarded?
- Olympic and World Championship medals by weight class.[2]
- WT world rankings and Olympic ranking points — from Grand Prix, Grand Slam and continental events.[3]
- Kukkiwon dan certification — the internationally recognized black-belt credential.[1]
- National-team selection, with poomsae world titles alongside sparring.[2]

Ties are broken by gold, then silver; a tie at tenth place is shown in full when four or fewer share it. Historic teams are kept as separate rows exactly as the source counts them. Verified September 2026.[5] [6]
