What is World Taekwondo?

World Taekwondo is the Olympic governing body of the sport — founded in Seoul in 1973 (as the WTF, renamed in 2017), with more than 200 member national associations, among the largest memberships in world sport.[1] [2]

Who leads it?

President Chungwon Choue, in office since 2004 and re-elected in 2025 with 143 of 149 votes for a final term running to 2029 — the leadership that modernized scoring, secured taekwondo's Olympic place and built the sport's humanitarian foundation.[4] [5]

Why does it matter?

World rankings, world titles and Olympic qualification in taekwondo all run through WT — with the Kukkiwon's dan registry the parallel credential for rank itself.[2] [3]
