What is the National Finals Rodeo?

The season-ending championship of professional rodeo, run by the PRCA with the Women's Professional Rodeo Association. First held at Dallas in 1959 and staged in Las Vegas since 1985, it runs ten consecutive go-rounds over ten nights: every qualifier competes once per night, money is paid in each round, and an average title is awarded on the aggregate.[1] [2]

How do cowboys and cowgirls qualify?

By money. The top 15 money-winners in the PRCA world standings in each of seven events — bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping heading and heeling, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping and bull riding — qualify, along with the top 15 WPRA barrel racers. Standings are cumulative regular-season earnings, subject to per-event limits on how many rodeos a contestant may count.[1] [3]

How are the world championships decided?

On total season earnings, regular season plus the NFR combined — which is why a gold buckle can change hands on the final night. The all-around title goes to the cowboy who wins the most money competing in two or more events. Stetson Wright's sixth all-around championship in 2025, on $817,088, tied him with Larry Mahan and Tom Ferguson.[2] [3]

Why does it matter?

Because it is the whole of rodeo's championship structure in one venue: the standings are literally a money list, and the NFR is where the year's money is concentrated. The PRCA and Las Vegas Events have extended the event's stay in Las Vegas through 2035, with more than $264 million committed in payouts to contestants and stock contractors.[2] [3]
