What is the CBE?

The Confederação Brasileira de Esgrima (CBE) is the national body for fencing in Brazil. Its home page carries the line “Empenhados em elevar o padrão da esgrima nacional” — committed to raising the standard of fencing in the country — and its footer identifies the entity as “Confederação Brasileira de Esgrima - CNPJ 42.178.699/0001-24” — its number in Brazil’s national register of legal entities.[2] The CBE states its mission as “Promover e representar a esgrima brasileira, de forma inclusiva, com ações estratégicas e inovadoras.”[4]

What does the CBE govern or do?

The CBE publishes national and international competition calendars and a national ranking.[6][2] Its site has menu sections labelled “Projetos COB” and “Projetos CPB”, and a transparency portal that holds its “Estatutos, Códigos e Regulamentos”.[2] Its stated values include “Excelência”, “Transparência”, “Inclusão”, “Ética” and “Compliance”, and its vision speaks of expanding fencing “para todas as regiões do Brasil”.[4]

When was the CBE founded and where is it based?

The CBE’s history page dates its origin to 5 June 1927, when the Federação Paulista de Esgrima and the Federação Carioca de Esgrima joined to create “a União Brasileira de Esgrima, com o apoio da Liga de Desportos do Exército e da Marinha.”[3] The same page records the change of name: “Em 14 de Abril de 1941 a União Brasileira de Esgrima transforma-se em Confederação Brasileira de Esgrima (CBE)”.[3]

The CBE gives its address as “Rua da Assembleia 10 Sala 3210, Centro, Rio de Janeiro, CEP 20011-901 | RJ”.[2] The FIE lists the same building with “sala 2612”.[1]

How is the CBE recognised?

International federation. On its page for the Pan American Fencing Confederation, the FIE lists the “Confederacao Brasileira de Esgrima” as Brazil’s member federation, with Arno Perillier Schneider as president and [email protected] as its contact.[1] The FIE describes its structure as “five continental confederations and their 156 national member federations”.[7] The CBE’s history page records the affiliation of its predecessor: “A União Brasileira de Esgrima se filia à Federação Internacional de Esgrima”.[3]

Continental body. The FIE places the CBE among the members of the Pan American Fencing Confederation.[1]

What does the CBE organise?

The CBE’s calendars page links to national and international competition calendars and to a document titled “PDF - Competições no Brasil, Sul-americanos e Pan-americanos”, covering competitions in Brazil and the South American and Pan American championships.[6] It maintains a national ranking section on its site.[2] Its news reports on Brazilian fencers at international events, among them the Copa do Mundo de Florete Juvenil and the Copa do Mundo Cadete de florete in Lima.[2]

Who are its members?

The CBE’s federations page, under the line “Conheça nossas federações parceiras”, links to the state fencing federations it works with.[5] Two state bodies stand at its origin: its history page names the Federação Paulista de Esgrima and the Federação Carioca de Esgrima as the federations that created the União Brasileira de Esgrima in 1927.[3]

The CBE is itself a member of the FIE through the Pan American Fencing Confederation.[1]
