What is the CAU?

The Confederación Atlética del Uruguay (CAU) is the national athletics federation of Uruguay. The Athletics Integrity Unit lists it under that name (code URU) among the national federations of World Athletics.[1] The CAU describes itself as the “entidad representativa máxima que rige los deportes atléticos” in Uruguay — the highest representative body governing athletics in the country.[4]

What does the CAU govern or do?

The CAU lists four objectives: “Organizar, dirigir y fomentar los deportes atléticos”; to centralise the organisation of athletics by bringing together under its direction all the federations and clubs that promote the sport; “Unificar los reglamentos del atletismo”; and “Homologar records nacionales” — to ratify national records.[4] Its site publishes national records, rankings and yearly results, and lists the national teams it selected from 2017 to 2024.[3]

When was the CAU founded and where is it based?

The CAU states: “La Confederación Atlética del Uruguay fundada el 1º de marzo de 1918 constituye la entidad representativa máxima” of athletics in Uruguay.[4] Its site’s library includes a book marking its centenary, the Libro CAU 100 años.[3]

The confederation gives its office as being at the official athletics track, open Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 17:00.[3]

How is the CAU recognised?

World Athletics. The Athletics Integrity Unit lists the Confederación Atlética del Uruguay (code URU) in its List of Categorised National Federations as of 2026, drawn up under Rule 15 of the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules, placing it in category B.[1][2]

CONSUDATLE. The same list assigns the CAU to the area association CONSUDATLE, the South American athletics confederation.[1] The CAU itself names World Athletics and CONSUDATLE first in its list of the bodies to which “La CAU está afiliada”.[4]

What does the CAU organise?

The CAU publishes a competition calendar for 2026 and results by year, and selects Uruguay’s national teams; its site lists the selections from 2017 to 2024.[3] Under its objectives it organises and directs athletics in Uruguay and ratifies national records.[4] It also names the IAU (ultrarunning), ITRA (trail running) and the CUD (Confederación Uruguaya de Deportes) among the bodies to which it states that it is affiliated.[4]

Who are its members?

The CAU defines its role as gathering under its direction “a todas las Federaciones y Clubes que fomenten este deporte” — all the federations and clubs that promote athletics in Uruguay.[4] Its site has a section for affiliated bodies (“Afiliadas”), alongside its national records and rankings.[3]
