What are the South American Athletics Championships?

The South American Athletics Championships — in Spanish the Campeonato Sudamericano de Atletismo de Mayores — are the senior outdoor continental championships for athletics in South America. The 2025 edition was held over three days, from 25 to 27 April, in a stadium and on a race-walking circuit, and its programme covered men’s and women’s track, field, race-walking and combined events, including a decathlon and a heptathlon.[1][3] The championships are a multi-event meeting: medals are awarded event by event, and athletes represent their national federations.

Who organizes the South American Athletics Championships?

The championships are run by Atletismo Sudamericano, historically the Confederación Sudamericana de Atletismo (CONSUDATLE), which World Athletics lists as the Area Association for the South America Area.[4] The results service for the 2025 edition carries the confederation as organiser.[3] World Athletics’ Area Association Rules oblige each Area Association to “hold at least every two calendar years at least one senior Area Championships in a Country or Territory in the Area” (Rule 6.1.1); for South America this is that event. The competition is held under World Athletics’ rules, and anti-doping is administered by the Athletics Integrity Unit.[4][6]

When and where are they held?

World Athletics requires the senior Area Championships to be held in a country or territory of the Area at least every two calendar years, and the host changes between editions.[4] The most recent edition, the 54th, was held at the Estadio Justo Ernesto Román in Mar del Plata, Argentina, from 25 to 27 April 2025, as reported by the Comité Olímpico de Panamá and the Argentine newspaper El Diario.[1][2] The previous edition was held in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2023: the Athletics Integrity Unit referred on 27 May 2024 to “last year’s South American Outdoor Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil”.[6] The host and dates of the next senior edition could not be confirmed from a retrieved source.

Edition number and host. The 2025 row rests on the Comité Olímpico de Panamá and El Diario; the 2023 row on an Athletics Integrity Unit release.[1][2][6] The organiser’s own results archive could not be retrieved, so the hosts of earlier editions could not be confirmed from a primary source.

Since when do they exist?

According to a 2018 history published by Polideportivo News, the confederation was formed in Buenos Aires on 24 May 1918 and “El Campeonato Sudamericano inaugural se celebró en Montevideo en abril de 1919. Solo Chile y Uruguay compitieron.”[5] The same article calls the confederation “la confederación más antigua del mundo del atletismo”, a characterisation that is the article’s own; the first-edition date rests on a single secondary source. The confederation’s founding (1918) and the first championships (1919) are separate dates. The 2025 edition was numbered the 54th, written “LIV” by the Panama Olympic Committee and “54°” by El Diario.[1][2]

How do athletes qualify?

Entry is through national federations: athletes represent the member federations of the South America Area, and World Athletics’ Rule 6.1.1 requires the senior Area Championships to be held “in a Country or Territory in the Area”.[4] Atletismo Sudamericano’s own competition regulations, which would set the number of entries per federation and any entry standards, could not be retrieved.

Why do they matter?

The measurable proxy is ranking value. In the World Athletics Rankings rules in force from 1 January 2026, “Area Senior Outdoor Championships” are competition category “GL”, scored in track and field, combined events, road running, race walking and cross country; Area Senior Indoor Championships are category “A”.[7] Placing points therefore feed the World Rankings that World Athletics publishes. No prize-money figure and no Olympic or Pan American Games qualification role for the championships could be found in a retrieved qualification document. Results at the 2023 edition were later affected by an anti-doping sanction: on 27 May 2024 the Athletics Integrity Unit announced a four-year ban disqualifying an athlete’s results from 18 July 2023, including that championship.[6]

Who competes?

The field is drawn from the member federations of the South America Area. The 2025 edition in Mar del Plata had men’s and women’s events; the results service lists 11 decathletes and 6 heptathletes among its entries.[3] Panama, which competes in the South American structure, sent seven athletes, according to its Olympic committee.[1] The total number of nations and athletes at the 2025 edition could not be confirmed from the organiser. The championships are an outdoor senior event; a separate South American indoor championship, the fourth (“IV Campeonato Sudamericano Indoor”), was held in Cochabamba, Bolivia, as the Comité Olímpico de Panamá reported on 25 February 2025.[8]
