What is Capital FM?
Capital FM is a commercial radio station broadcasting in Nairobi on 98.4 FM, with a digital newsroom that publishes news, business, lifestyle and sport. Its web address is capitalfm.africa; the earlier address capitalfm.co.ke redirected there when checked on 19 September 2026.[1] The site's footer carries the name Capital Group and a Nairobi address at Two Rivers Mall.[1]
In an item published on 10 May 2026 marking thirty years on air, the station says it has moved from being a radio brand to “a broader multimedia platform delivering authentic news, digital storytelling, lifestyle content, podcasts, social-first content and live experiences”, and that it was among the first Kenyan media houses to stream radio online. Those are the station's descriptions of itself.[3]
The same item names Mary-Ann Musangi as chairperson and Symon Bargurei as managing director; those are the office-holders as stated on 10 May 2026.[3]
What does Capital FM cover?
The sport site is divided into eight named sections: World Cup 2026, Football, Basketball, Athletics, English Premier League, Kenyan Premier League, Rugby and Golf.[1] Athletics is one of the eight rather than a sub-heading of general sport, which is the structural point that distinguishes a continuing beat from occasional coverage.
Items on the athletics index, retrieved on 19 September 2026, covered Nairobi's successful bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships and the announcement that preceded it, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, the Strathmore annual run, university athletics including Kenyatta University teams qualifying for a varsity invitational, and features on former record holders advising athletes on managing earnings.[2] The mix is domestic road running, university competition and the international championship calendar.
Elsewhere in sport the same day the site carried court rulings affecting the resumption of the FKF Premier League, the Kenya National Basketball League semi-finals, the national rugby sevens circuit, mixed martial arts in Nairobi and golf on the Sunshine Development Tour in Uganda.[1]
Neither the sport index nor the athletics index displayed publication dates or reporter bylines when retrieved, so the frequency of publication and the identity of the reporters could not be measured from those pages.[1][2]
How large is Capital FM's audience?
No audited or regulator-published audience figure specific to Capital FM could be retrieved, and the station's own thirtieth-anniversary item gives none, saying only that it targets “younger, urban and digitally savvy audiences”.[3]
Two published measurements of Kenyan radio exist and neither lists the station. GeoPoll's summary for January to December 2024 names seven radio stations — Radio Citizen at 72.4 per cent, Radio Jambo at 68.6 per cent, Radio Maisha at 68.1 per cent, Milele FM at 64.2 per cent, Classic 105 at 63.7 per cent, Radio Taifa at 61 per cent and Kiss FM at 59.6 per cent — and Capital FM is not among them; GeoPoll states those figures are “a high-level summary” rather than “actual cumulative reach” and gives no sample size on that page.[4] The Media Council of Kenya's State of the Media Survey 2025, from fieldwork of 15–25 April 2026 with 3,774 interviews across all 47 counties, names Radio Maisha at 14.9 per cent, Radio Jambo at 14.3 per cent and Radio Citizen at 13.2 per cent as the most listened stations, and no figure for Capital FM appears in the extract retrieved.[5]
The platform figures are national rather than station-level. The Communications Authority of Kenya recorded 74 per cent of respondents having listened to radio in the previous seven days in January to March 2026, the highest of any medium, and sport at 13.94 per cent of radio genre preference, behind news and current affairs at 46.7 per cent and entertainment and talk shows at 21.11 per cent.[6] Sport's share of radio listening is close to three times its 4.7 per cent share of television genre preference in the same report.[6]
Since when has Capital FM existed?
The station's own anniversary item, published on 10 May 2026, gives 1996 as its launch year and names Linda Holt as its founder, and refers to a later acquisition era under the late Chris Kirubi.[3] The launch of the station and the change of ownership are separate events; the date of the acquisition is not given in that item and could not be established from another source retrieved.
The date on which the digital newsroom moved from capitalfm.co.ke to capitalfm.africa is likewise not stated in any source retrieved; what can be recorded is that the older address returned a redirect to the newer one when checked on 19 September 2026.[1] When athletics became a separately indexed sport section could not be established.
Why does Capital FM matter in Kenya's sport?
The station's sport desk is structured around a separately indexed athletics beat rather than a measured audience, which is not available. Athletics is one of eight named sport sections, and the items in it run across the domestic road-race calendar, university competition and the international championship cycle rather than appearing only for a global final.[1][2]
The medium also matters for reach. Radio was the most-used medium in the Communications Authority's January to March 2026 quarter, at 74 per cent of respondents in the previous seven days, and sport takes a markedly larger share of radio listening than of television watching — 13.94 per cent against 4.7 per cent.[6] A radio brand with a working digital sport desk therefore sits where a large share of Kenyan sport consumption happens, even though a station-level figure for this one could not be retrieved.[5]
The limits should be stated with the same precision. No audited or regulator figure for the station was retrievable; the sport and athletics indexes display no dates or bylines, so the volume and authorship of the output could not be measured; and the station's account of its own founding and leadership rests on a single item it published itself on 10 May 2026.[3][4]
