What sports are played in El Salvador?
No list of member federations from the Comité Olímpico de El Salvador (COES) or the Instituto Nacional de los Deportes (INDES) could be retrieved; breadth is given from dated records.
Olympic entries. Olympedia's page for El Salvador at the 2024 Summer Olympics lists entries in archery, badminton, judo, sailing, shooting, surfing and swimming.[4] Its page for 1968 lists athletics, road cycling, football, sailing, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.[3]
Regional Games. The COES reported on 9 August 2026 that at the Central American and Caribbean Games of Santo Domingo 2026 “los atletas salvadoreños conquistaron un total de 24 preseas en la justa regional: seis de oro, cuatro de plata y 14 de bronce.” It named gold medals for the women's and men's compound archery teams, in events it calls the “100 metros sprint” and the “200 metros”, in men's doubles and in the swimming 50 metres butterfly, and stated: “Las 14 preseas de bronce llegaron en las disciplinas deportivas de tiro con arco, patinaje artístico, bádminton, ajedrez, fútbol femenino, judo, karate (3), patinaje de velocidad (2), surf, natación y levantamiento de pesas.”[6]
What is the most popular spectator sport in El Salvador?
No measured ranking of spectator sports and no season attendance figure for any league was retrieved; the proxies are broadcaster carriage and one television-audience reading.
Carriage. TCS Ahora, the news site of the Telecorporación Salvadoreña group, reported on 9 October 2025 that El Salvador's home matches against Panama on 10 October and Guatemala on 14 October “se podrán vivir en señal exclusiva a través de Canal 4 y TCS Go”, for users in El Salvador.[25] Diario El Mundo listed Canal 4 as the broadcaster of two domestic football matches on 26 September 2026.[31] INDES states that +Deportes, a sports programme it produces, went on air on the public Canal 10 on Monday 28 August 2023, live on weekdays.[28]
Television audience. A 2022 study in the Universidad de El Salvador's journal Minerva, using Rivera y Rivera Research rating data for the single week of 11 to 17 October 2018, put TCS's weekday audience share at 64.53 per cent.[26] That is a channel-group figure for one week, not a measure of any sport.
How is sport organised in El Salvador?
The statute. The Ley General de los Deportes de El Salvador is Decreto Legislativo N.º 491 of 28 November 2019, published in the Diario Oficial N.º 32, Tomo 426, on 17 February 2020, as the preamble of the 2025 reforming decree records.[10] The text read is the decree as issued, not a consolidation. Its preamble records that the previous Ley General de los Deportes was issued by Decreto Legislativo N.º 469 of 15 November 2007 and states the need to issue a new law.
It goes on to describe the committee as an autonomous non-profit civil association of public utility with its own legal personality, statutes and regulations, in keeping with the Olympic Charter, the World Anti-Doping Code and the IOC's provisions, and states: “Para el ejercicio de sus funciones, corresponde al Comité Olímpico la representación exclusiva de El Salvador ante los juegos oficializados por el Comité Olímpico Internacional.” Its second paragraph requires the committee, “A fin de formalizar su personería jurídica”, to present its statutes and its board's credentials to INDES's Registro Nacional de Federaciones y Asociaciones Deportivas.[9]
The 2025 reform. Decreto N.º 244 of 4 March 2025, published in the Diario Oficial N.º 46, Tomo 446, on 6 March 2025, reformed articles 13 to 16, 18, 35, 40, 41, 43, 45, 50, 51 and 105. Reformed article 35 provides that federations and associations recognised by INDES “gozarán de plena autonomía e independencia en su organización, funcionamiento y toma de decisiones”, governed by their own statutes “siempre que estos sean expresamente reconocidos y aprobados por los organismos internacionales a los que estén afiliadas”, and that “Los organismos internacionales a los que estén afiliadas tendrán competencia exclusiva para intervenir, supervisar, o normalizar su funcionamiento en caso de ser necesario”. Reformed article 18(o) directs INDES to notify international federations of irregularities and provides that, if one does not respond within “cuarenta y cinco días hábiles”, INDES may issue agreements to guarantee the national federation's administrative functioning, to safeguard its employees' rights, until the international federation rules on the case.[10]
The Olympic committee. The COES states: “Fue fundado el 11 de febrero de 1925 y se rige bajo las normas y principios de la Carta Olímpica del Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI).”[5] Olympedia states instead that “El Salvador's National Olympic Committee was formed on 6 April 1949, but it was not recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) until 1962.”[1] Each date is given as its source prints it, and neither is adopted. Panam Sports lists the committee among its members.[7]
Football. elsalvador.com reported in April 2026 that “La Federación Salvadoreña de Fútbol fue fundada en 1935” and that El Salvador joined FIFA in 1938 and later Concacaf.[16]
Registration, 2021. The Presidencia de la República reported on 15 March 2021 that the Government had agreed to register 170 sports associations and clubs, FESFUT among them, with INDES, moving them from the Registro de Fundaciones Sin Fines de Lucro to INDES's Registro Nacional de Federaciones y Asociaciones Deportivas. The release gives no instrument number.[32]
FIFA's 2022 decision. La Prensa Gráfica reported on 20 July 2022 that FIFA had called an order of the Tribunal de Disciplina, Ética y Apelaciones del Deporte, which directed INDES to set up a Comisión Normalizadora at FESFUT, “una injerencia indebida en los estatutos de la federación”, with a deadline of 25 July.[12] Diez reported that the INDES board decided on 23 July to “interrumpir el funcionamiento de la Comisión Normalizadora instalada en la Fesfut”.[13] On 2 August 2022 FIFA announced that “The Bureau of the FIFA Council has decided to appoint a normalisation committee for the Salvadoran Football Association (FESFUT) following the suspension of the entire FESFUT Executive Committee and the General Secretary by the Sports Disciplinary, Ethics and Appeal Committee” of INDES. It stated that the mandate would include running daily affairs, reviewing the statutes and organising elections of a new executive committee.[11] No FIFA announcement of the end of that mandate was retrieved. The Tico Times reported on 13 December 2025 that a FESFUT congress had elected a president, the sole candidate, who took office that Friday; that the committee's chairman handed control of the federation to him; and that the appointment “ends FIFA's intervention in Fesfut”.[33] FIFA's page for the association, read on 26 September 2026, lists a president and a general secretary.[34]
Match-fixing sanctions. Concacaf republished FESFUT's statement of 20 September 2013, which announced sanctions imposed by FESFUT's Disciplinary Commission on players “for their links to match fixing” in national-team matches against DC United and the United States (friendlies, 2010), Mexico (Gold Cup 2011) and Paraguay (friendly, 2013). The statement said that the first phase was complete and that its investigation of a friendly against Venezuela on 22 May 2013 remained open.[14]
What are the main domestic leagues and competitions?
Football. TCS Ahora's league page names the competition as the Primera División de Fútbol Profesional de El Salvador and its current tournament as the Torneo Apertura 2026.[24] No site of the league itself could be retrieved. Diario El Mundo, previewing the twelfth round on 26 September 2026, named the competition the “Liga GanaPlay Apertura 2026” and listed Canal 4 and FOX as broadcasters of that weekend's matches.[31]
How has El Salvador performed at the Olympic Games?
All figures here are Olympedia's, from its tables for the code ESA, read as rows. Olympedia prints no totals row under any table.[1]
Editions and codes. Olympedia's participation table lists El Salvador, as “El Salvador”, at the Summer Games of 1932, 1968, 1972, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024. It lists no 1906 row and no Winter Games row. Nothing filed under another code is included here.[1]
Before the war. The only pre-war row is 1932, one man and no women. Olympedia's page for El Salvador at the 1932 Games lists that entry under “Other Arts”, in “Unknown Event, Open”, with the result “HC”, so it is an art-competitions entry.[2]
1968 to 1988. Rows, as men, women and total entrants: 1968, 52, 8, 60; 1972, 11, 0, 11; 1984, 9, 1, 10; 1988, 5, 1, 6. There is no row for 1976 or 1980. Olympedia's 1968 page lists the football team's result in the men's tournament as “=13”.[1][3]
From 1992. 1992, 3, 1, 4; 1996, 6, 2, 8; 2000, 4, 4, 8; 2004, 2, 5, 7; 2008, 4, 7, 11; 2012, 5, 5, 10; 2016, 5, 3, 8; 2020, 3, 2, 5; 2024, 7, 1, 8.[1]
Medals. Olympedia's Medals by Games table has one row: the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics, typed “Youth Olympic Games”, with 0 gold, 1 silver and 0 bronze, in swimming. Youth Olympic Games rows are typed separately and are not Olympic Games rows. The table carries no Olympic Games row and no art-competition medal.[1]
Narrative. Olympedia's narrative states: “Six years then passed before El Salvador competed at the Olympic Games in 1968, since when it has been absent only from the Olympics of 1976 and 1980. It has won no Olympic medals to date and has not yet competed at the Olympic Winter Games.” The narrative's 1968 start and the participation table's 1932 art-competitions row are both Olympedia's, and both are given here.[1]
Which athletes and teams are internationally recognised?
FIFA World Cup, 1970. FIFA wrote on 20 August 2020: “El Salvador prevailed in two of the three fixtures against Honduras and advanced to the final against Haiti, where they would secure a maiden World Cup qualification.”[15] The statistics site 11v11 lists El Salvador's World Cup matches of 1970 as Belgium 3, El Salvador 0 on 3 June; Mexico 4, El Salvador 0 on 7 June; and El Salvador 0, USSR 2 on 10 June.[17]
FIFA World Cup, 1982. 11v11 lists a qualifying match on 19 November 1981 as Haiti 0, El Salvador 1, and the 1982 finals matches as Hungary 10, El Salvador 1 on 15 June; Belgium 1, El Salvador 0 on 19 June; and Argentina 2, El Salvador 0 on 23 June.[18] FIFA's own match pages could not be read, so these results rest on that single secondary source.
What major international competitions has El Salvador hosted?
Central American and Caribbean Games. Centro Caribe Sports lists three editions in San Salvador: 1935, “16 Marzo - 5 Abril”, with 9 delegations and 741 athletes; 2002, “19 Noviembre - 30 Noviembre”, with 31 delegations and 4,301 athletes; and 2023, “23 Junio - 8 Julio”, with 37 delegations and 54 disciplines, for which its athletes column reads 0.[21]
Surfing. The International Surfing Association lists the 2021 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games, from 29 May to 6 June 2021 at La Bocana and El Sunzal, which it calls “Surfing's last Olympic Qualifier for Tokyo 2020”.[22] It lists the 2023 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Longboard Surfing Championship, 7 to 13 May 2023 at Surf City.[23] It lists the 2023 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games, 30 May to 7 June, with a “Record 63 Nations”, as a qualifying event for Paris 2024.[27]
What are El Salvador's main sporting rivalries?
Honduras, football. The counts that follow come from a single secondary statistics site, not from either federation's record. 11v11 publishes El Salvador's men's record against Honduras as “Games won: 15 | Games drawn: 19 | Games lost: 38”. Its list opens with a 4–1 Honduran win at the Central American and Caribbean Games on 29 March 1930 and ends with a 2–0 Honduran win at the Gold Cup on 21 June 2025.[19]
The 1969 qualifiers. 11v11 lists three FIFA World Cup matches: Honduras 1, El Salvador 0 on 8 June 1969; El Salvador 3, Honduras 0 on 15 June 1969; and Honduras 2, El Salvador 3 on 30 June 1969.[19] Its report of the third match names it the “FIFA World Cup CONCACAF 2nd phase play-off”, places it in Mexico City, gives an attendance of 15,326 and records El Salvador's winner in the 101st minute, in extra time.[20] RSSSF, another statistics site, lists the first two matches in Tegucigalpa and San Salvador on the same dates, and dates the play-off in Mexico City, El Salvador 3, Honduras 2 after extra time, 26 June 1969.[35] FIFA's own match record could not be retrieved, so each play-off date is given as its source prints it.
Guatemala, football. 11v11 publishes El Salvador's record against Guatemala as “Games won: 18 | Games drawn: 23 | Games lost: 37”. Its first entry is an 8–2 Salvadoran win at the Central American and Caribbean Games on 19 March 1930, and its latest a 1–0 Guatemalan win in World Cup qualifying on 14 October 2025.[30]
What is the role of school and university sport?
The statute. Article 89 of Decreto Legislativo N.º 491 makes the teaching of physical education and the training of its teachers the competence of the Ministerio de Educación, Ciencia y Tecnología. The law deals separately with sport in higher education under the heading “Deporte de Educación Superior”.[9]
Student games. INDES's website links a “Calendario Juegos Estudiantiles”, which leads to the calendar of the Juegos Deportivos Estudiantiles Nacionales (JDEN), filterable by sport, department and category.[8][29] No participation figure for the student games, and no publication from a university sport body, was retrieved.
Were any sports invented in El Salvador?
No federation, government instrument or standard reference retrieved claims that a sport was invented or codified in El Salvador.
National sport. The articles of Decreto Legislativo N.º 491 that were read, 1, 6, 32, 88, 89, 90 and 98, declare no national sport. Article 98 uses the phrase in its general sense: “El Estado asignará al INDES los fondos necesarios, para el desarrollo del deporte nacional”.[9]
