What are the PanAmerican Boxing Championships?
The PanAmerican Boxing Championships are the continental championships for Olympic-style boxing in the Americas held under World Boxing. World Boxing’s calendar lists the event as “PanAmerican Boxing Championships | Elite: Men, Women”, filed under “Confederation Events”, so men and women both compete in the senior category.[2] The event is one of three continental championships that World Boxing announced in January 2026, alongside the Asian Boxing Championships and the European Boxing Championship, as the first championships of its new continental confederations.[3] World Boxing’s competitions page sets the intended rhythm: it hosts Elite and U19 world championships “every two years”, and “following the formation of continental confederations, the same approach will apply to Continental Championships.”[4] The weight categories for the Puebla edition were not published on the calendar entry.
Who organizes the PanAmerican Boxing Championships?
The organiser is the Panamerican Boxing Confederation, World Boxing’s continental confederation for the Americas, whose inaugural Congress met in Panama City on 15 March 2025.[6] Article 8.4 of the World Boxing Statutes, in the edition in effect from 1 July 2026, states that continental confederations “must organise events and develop Boxing on their continents in a manner consistent with these Statutes, the Code of Ethics and the Rules and Policies of World Boxing.”[1] The championships therefore run under World Boxing’s rules, and World Boxing carries the event on its own competition calendar. The national federations that enter teams are World Boxing members; USA Boxing, for one, lists the “2026 PanAmerican Championships” in Puebla on its own events pages.[7] The International Boxing Association, on its own site, lists no continental unit for the Americas.[8]
When and where is it held?
The first edition is scheduled for Puebla, Mexico. World Boxing’s calendar gives the dates as 17–25 October 2026; on 1 October 2026 the event had not yet begun.[2] The dates moved during 2026: World Boxing’s updated competition calendar of 21 January 2026 had placed the championships on 10–17 October 2026.[3] USA Boxing’s event page gives the same 17–25 October window as World Boxing’s current calendar.[7] No venue in Puebla was named on either calendar entry. World Boxing’s stated plan is for continental championships, like its world championships, to be held every two years; its calendar listed no later edition of the PanAmerican championships on 1 October 2026.[4]

Since when does it exist?
The championships date from the creation of World Boxing’s continental structure. World Boxing announced on 27 January 2025 that it would establish a confederation for the Americas, formed by 17 of its member federations; the Confederation’s statutes were ratified at its inaugural Congress on 15 March 2025.[9][6] World Boxing’s January 2026 calendar then said that “following the establishment of Continental Confederations in 2025, the next 12 months will see three of them host their inaugural championships”, the Puebla event among them.[3] World Boxing’s calendar files the Puebla event under “Confederation Events”, making the 2026 edition the first held by the Panamerican Boxing Confederation.[2]
How do boxers qualify?
Entry is through national federations. Article 8.5 of the World Boxing Statutes provides that a full member of World Boxing “will automatically become a member of its Continental Confederation, subject to any additional Continental Confederation rules and requirements”, which makes the World Boxing members of the Americas the federations eligible to enter.[1] Each federation selects its own boxers. USA Boxing’s page for the event, retrieved on 1 October 2026, listed no team and said: “Stay tuned for more information!”[7] The entry regulations for the Puebla edition, including the number of boxers per nation and per weight category, were not published on World Boxing’s calendar entry and could not be retrieved.[2]
Why does it matter?
The championships are not an Olympic qualifier. World Boxing’s qualification system for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, in the version of 6 May 2026, names no 2026 event as a qualification event; the Americas route is a separate “Pan American Qualifier – Dates & Location TBD”, set for 2027 or 2028, with two quota places in each of the seven women’s and seven men’s weight categories.[5] Boxing is also on the programme of the Lima 2027 Pan American Games, 23 July to 8 August 2027.[10] No prize money and no ranking-point value for the Puebla championships had been published by 1 October 2026.
Who competes?
The field is drawn from World Boxing’s member federations in the Americas, in men’s and women’s competition.[2] World Boxing’s directory of federations, which groups members by region including “Pan America”, lists among them the federations of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia and Cuba; it gives a worldwide total of 182 member national federations.[11] At the Confederation’s founding Congress in March 2025, Panam Sports counted 18 member national federations.[6] The number of nations and boxers entered at Puebla had not been published by 1 October 2026, before the event began.
