What is the LBPRC?

The Liga de Béisbol Profesional de Puerto Rico Roberto Clemente — La Pro — is Puerto Rico’s professional winter league and a full member of the Caribbean confederation, whose champion represents the island at the Caribbean Series. Six franchises play from November to January; the league announced on 8 September 2026 that its 2026–27 season opens on 4 November with all six.[1] [4]

How does it work?

The regular season runs to 28 December in 2026–27, keeping a wild-card rule under which a fifth-placed team within one game of fourth forces a sudden-death game; the final series is a best-of-nine. Each franchise fills its roster with Puerto Rican players and a limited number of imports. The 2025–26 final was decided in six games, Santurce beating Ponce 5–1 on 20 January 2026, with the Washington Nationals prospect Yohandy Morales as MVP.[2] [3] [4]

Since when does it exist?

The league was founded in 1938 and took Roberto Clemente’s name in May 2012. Criollos de Caguas won five titles in the decade to 2025–26, including the abbreviated January 2018 season played after Hurricane Maria, and Santurce’s 2025–26 championship was the club’s 17th pennant; Indios de Mayagüez took the other two.[2] [5]

Why does it matter?

Puerto Rico is second all-time at the Caribbean Series with 16 titles, and the league drew about 381,000 spectators in 2025–26. As a winter league whose final MVP in 2026 was a top MLB prospect, it is where Puerto Rican and visiting professionals play their off-season — and a La Pro contract is a professional contract in a CBPC league.[2] [4] [6]
