What are the Americas Triathlon Championships?

The Americas Triathlon Championships are the continental triathlon championships of the Americas, staged by Americas Triathlon. They decide continental titles in individual triathlon and, in recent editions, the mixed relay. At the 2025 edition in Calima, Colombia, the individual race was held over the Olympic distance, and a mixed relay had each athlete cover a 300 m swim, 6 km bike and 1.5 km run, as Triathlon Canada reported.[5]

Titles are decided by age category within the same event. At Montevideo in 2022 there were separate junior races alongside the elite races, with under-23 titles also awarded.[6]

Who organizes the Americas Triathlon Championships?

The organiser is Americas Triathlon, the continental confederation of World Triathlon, which names it among its five continental confederations.[4] The confederation was established, by its own account, on 9 May 1992 as the Panamerican Triathlon Confederation (PATCO), and has also used the name CAMTRI.[1] Its website is a sub-site of World Triathlon’s and lists the championships with its Americas Triathlon Cup and Junior Cup circuits.[2]

When and where is it held?

The championships move between member countries. The confederation records the first edition in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in 1997, and states that the same city was scheduled to host the 2010 PATCO Championship on 16 October.[1] Recent editions were held in Montevideo, Uruguay, on Saturday 29 October 2022, and in Calima, Colombia, in June 2025.[6][5] The most recent edition was held in Antofagasta, Chile, on 4–5 July 2026, alongside the Americas Paratriathlon Championships; World Triathlon reported more than 600 athletes from more than 20 countries across the event’s races, including age-group and youth categories.[8][9] The date window has varied between June and October, and no fixed frequency is stated in a retrieved source.

Since when does it exist?

The confederation’s about page states that its inaugural championship took place in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on 29 August 1997, five years after the confederation itself was established in May 1992.[1] The event has carried the names of the confederation that ran it: PATCO Championship in the confederation’s own older text, and Americas Triathlon Championships in the reports of 2022 and 2025.[6] Junior championships were for a period held separately: the confederation’s archive holds documents for Pan American Junior Triathlon Championships from 2011 to 2014 and CAMTRI Junior Championships from 2015 to 2017.[3]

How do athletes qualify?

No current entry regulation for the championships could be retrieved from Americas Triathlon or World Triathlon, whose document library serves its files through a script whose text could not be read. What the edition reports show is that athletes race for their national federations, by age category: Triathlon Canada sent elite, under-23 and junior athletes to Montevideo in 2022, and in 2025 a Canadian athlete took the under-23 silver medal while placing seventh overall in the combined race, which shows that under-23 athletes are ranked within the elite field.[6][5] Mixed relay teams are national: Canada’s 2025 relay was a team of four.[5]

Why does it matter?

The championships award the continental triathlon titles of the Americas, the region that also contests triathlon at the Pan American Games; triathlon is on the Lima 2027 programme, 23 July–8 August 2027.[7] The Lima 2027 triathlon qualification system could not be retrieved, so no Pan American Games qualification role is stated, and no World Triathlon Olympic qualification system for Los Angeles 2028 naming the event could be retrieved. Ranking points, prize money and entry numbers were not published in the sources retrieved.

Who competes?

The field is drawn from the national federations of the Americas affiliated to World Triathlon; the confederation’s older about page gives 38 member federations.[1] The categories reported for recent editions are elite men and women, under-23 men and women (raced within the elite races), junior men and women and the mixed relay.[6][5] Canada’s federation has entered recent editions, as its reports show; national bodies in the region include USA Triathlon, the Confederação Brasileira de Triathlon and the Federación Mexicana de Triatlón.
