What it is
The Federación Mexicana de Triatlón is a civil association founded in 1989, operating from the federations building in Mexico City and running a national circuit since its founding. It publishes its statutes and their implementing regulations.[1] [2]
Its executive committee for 2024-2028 was sworn in at the general assembly of 5 December 2024. That assembly also produced the best published figures of any triathlon federation in the region: 23 state associations present, 313 affiliated technical officials, 241 coaches trained in the year, and 20,595 athletes competing across 30 sanctioned events in the 2024 season. A Mexican serves as secretary general of the continental confederation.[3] [4]
How the national team is selected
Mexico publishes per-event criteria and a gateway eligibility document, and the structure is unusually explicit.
The gateway is an annual Criterios de Elegibilidad, which designates the continental cups, world cups and championship series rounds as the official eligibility competitions and requires a pre-participation medical evaluation, the anti-doping course, a passport valid all year and current federation affiliation. It also imposes four federation-run physical test windows across the year.[5]
To be eligible an athlete must satisfy both conditions: finish within 5% of the winner at a continental cup, or within 8% at a world cup or championship series round; and finish within 10% of the best result in each segment and transition in the federation's tests. A technical override applies — athletes in the world top 20 at publication are eligible automatically, and the high-performance technical commission may declare others eligible.[5]
Per-event criteria then draw from that pool. For a continental championship, one place goes to a top-20 world-ranked athlete on a stated date and the second and any further places are assigned on technical criteria — with the commission reserving the right not to fill places for sporting or budgetary reasons, conditioned on the support received from the government sports commission.[6]
The document that records selection is a one-page convocatoria issued by the high-performance technical committee, naming the athletes.[7]
The annual affiliation carries a persistent number, a printable athlete credential and accident insurance, and is obligatory for any sanctioned event.[8]
