What is World Archery Americas?
World Archery Americas is the continental association for archery in the Americas within World Archery, the sport’s world federation. World Archery’s Constitution and Procedures (Book 1 of its rulebook, version of 27 January 2026) provide that “World Archery recognises one Continental Association for each of the following five areas”: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.[3] World Archery describes itself as having “five continental member associations and more than 160 national member associations”.[4]
The association runs its own site, in Spanish, with sections for its organisation, committees, news, events, results and records, and links to its statutes and a development plan, hosted as shared files.[1][2] Its council list names a president and a secretary general from Colombia for 2026–2030, vice-presidents from Guatemala, Cuba, Mexico and Brazil, an honorary vice-president from Canada, and council members from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Argentina, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago and Canada.[2] Its legal form could not be established: the statutes file linked from its site could not be retrieved, and World Archery’s rulebook does not state one.
The association covers the disciplines World Archery governs; its championships include recurve and compound, and the 2026 Pan American Championships also included barebow.[6]
What does World Archery Americas govern or do?
The association writes no rules of the sport. Competition in the Americas runs under World Archery’s rulebook, and Article 1.4.4.1 of Book 1 sets out what a continental association is for: “To promote and encourage Archery throughout its area in conformity with the Olympic and World Archery principles and goals”; “To assist World Archery in areas of event management, development and education”; “To arrange for the organisation of Continental Championships and International Events in any discipline”; “To confirm and maintain Continental Records”; and “To maintain the results of the Continental Championships.”[3]
Those tasks match the sections of its site, which publishes continental results and records, and runs MICA, which it describes as a “torneo internacional de participación masiva gratuito”, held from January to June each year.[9] It also reports on archery at the regional multi-sport Games of the continent: in 2026 it covered the recurve and compound finals of the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo and the archery events of the South American Games in Santa Fe, Argentina.[1]
Anti-doping, world rankings and the shooting rules are World Archery’s; no document retrieved names the continental association as a signatory of the World Anti-Doping Code in its own right.
When was World Archery Americas founded and where is it based?
No founding date for World Archery Americas could be confirmed from a retrievable primary source. Its organisation page lists officers and council members and links to its statutes, but gives no history, and the statutes file could not be retrieved.[2] The world federation’s history is separate: World Archery states that it “was founded in 1931” and gives its address as the Maison du Sport International in Lausanne, Switzerland.[4]
The association’s own site gives its address as Carrera 66B N° 31A-15, Medellín, Colombia, with a Colombian telephone number.[1] The council list names María Emma Gaviria (Colombia) as president and Sergio Font (Colombia) as secretary general, each for 2026–2030, with other council terms running 2024–2028 or 2026–2030.[2] Whether the Medellín address is a statutory seat or an administrative office could not be checked against the statutes. The association announced that its General Assembly would meet in Tlaxcala, Mexico, on 22 June 2026, on the eve of the Pan American Championships.[8]
How is World Archery Americas recognised?
The recognising instrument is World Archery’s. Article 1.4.4 of Book 1, version of 27 January 2026, states: “World Archery recognises one Continental Association for each of the following five areas”, listing “The Americas” among them, and continues: “All Member Associations are automatically members of the Continental Association based on NOC’s respective continental organisations, except as otherwise determined by the Executive Board.”[3] The delegation that follows, under Article 1.4.4.1, is continental championships and international events, continental records and results, and support to World Archery in event management, development and education.[3]
Olympic recognition belongs to the world federation. World Archery states that it is recognised by the “International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee, International World Games Association”;[4] the continental association holds no IOC recognition of its own.
The continental multi-sport tie is the Pan American Games of Panam Sports, scheduled for Lima from 23 July to 8 August 2027.[11] World Archery reported that the team finals of the 2026 Pan American Championships “also served as the main qualification event for the Lima 2027 Pan American Games”.[7] The Panam Sports qualification system for archery at Lima 2027 could not be retrieved, and a Panam Sports list of recognised continental confederations naming the association could not be retrieved either.
What does World Archery Americas organise?
World Archery Americas runs the senior Pan American Archery Championships. World Archery described the 2026 edition, at the Centro de Atletismo “Una Nueva Historia” in Tlaxcala, Mexico, from 22 to 28 June 2026, as the 22nd Pan American Championships, with 181 archers (105 men and 76 women) from 19 countries, in recurve, compound and barebow; the previous edition was held in Medellín, Colombia, in 2024.[6] The association’s own announcement gave the dates as 23 to 28 June 2026.[8]
World Archery reported 54 places for the Lima 2027 Pan American Games available at Tlaxcala: in recurve, places for “the top five teams in each gender” and three more through individual qualification, and in compound, places for “the top four teams in each gender” and one individual place.[6] The team titles went to the United States in recurve men, recurve women and compound men, and to Mexico in compound women.[7] Archery Canada reported winning its two recurve places “through the Pan American Games individual qualification events”.[10] The association stated that further places would be awarded at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games and South American Games, and at a final qualifier to be set by its General Assembly.[8]
For para archery, the association announced a championship in Lima from 21 to 25 October 2026, distributing 38 places for the 2027 Parapan American Games; on 4 October 2026 that event was upcoming.[1]
Who are its members?
Membership follows from World Archery’s: under Article 1.4.4 of Book 1, “All Member Associations are automatically members of the Continental Association based on NOC’s respective continental organisations, except as otherwise determined by the Executive Board”, so the members are the World Archery member associations of countries whose National Olympic Committees belong to Panam Sports.[3] The association’s site points readers to World Archery’s member directory filtered to the Americas for its list of “Asociaciones Miembros”, and prints no count of its own.[1]
World Archery’s directory states that the federation “has national member federations in 162 countries over five continental regions”; the Americas share of that figure is not printed on the page retrieved.[5] The 2026 Pan American Championships drew entries from 19 countries, World Archery reported.[6] Nations named in the qualification results include the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Canada, El Salvador, Argentina and Venezuela.[7] The council itself draws its members from Colombia, Guatemala, Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Argentina, Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago.[2]
