What is Svensk Friidrott?
Svenska Friidrottsförbundet, which presents itself as Svensk Friidrott and in English as Swedish Athletics, is the national athletics federation of Sweden. It states: “Swedish Athletics is the national federation for athletics in Sweden.”[4] The Athletics Integrity Unit lists it as the Swedish Athletic Association (code SWE) among the national federations of World Athletics.[1]
What does Svensk Friidrott govern or do?
The federation describes its work as developing and administering athletics in Sweden and representing Sweden, through the national team, at international championships.[4] Its site has sections on competition and the national team, clubs, para athletics and veterans’ athletics, and publishes a national competition calendar.[3]
When was Svensk Friidrott founded and where is it based?
The federation refers enquiries to its head office in Stockholm and gives its address as Svenska Friidrottsförbundet, c/o Bauhaus Sickla, Sickla Allé 2-4, 131 65 Nacka.[4]
Its present regional structure dates from a decision of its 2020 general assembly (Förbundsmöte), under which athletics has had a regional structure of nine districts from 1 January 2022; the federation states that the 23 districts were converted into the present nine (“omvandlades de 23 distrikten till dagens nio”).[5] The federation’s chief (förbundschef), David Fridell, is named on its site as the responsible publisher.[4]
How is Svensk Friidrott recognised?
World Athletics. The Athletics Integrity Unit lists the Swedish Athletic Association (code SWE) in its List of Categorised National Federations as of 2026, drawn up under Rule 15 of the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules, placing it in category B.[1][2]
European Athletics. The same list assigns the federation to the area association EA, European Athletics.[1]
What does Svensk Friidrott organise?
The federation lists among its competitions the Swedish Championships (Svenska Mästerskap), the Svenska Friidrottscupen and the team championships Lag-SM and Lag-USM.[4] Its home page carried a call for an organiser of the Swedish athletics championships of 2029 (“Vi söker även arrangör för Friidrotts-SM 2029.”).[3] Its results and statistics section keeps historical pages on international championships, Swedish world records and the Diamond League.[6]
Who are its members?
The federation’s regional structure consists of nine districts: Gotland-Stockholm, Göteborg, Mittsvenska, Norra Norrland, Skåne, Södra Norrland, Södra Svealand, Västsvenska and Östsvenska.[5] The federation states that the aim of the structure is for the districts to have “mer kraft att stötta och utveckla föreningarna lokalt” — more strength to support and develop the clubs (föreningar) locally.[5]
