What is the PZS?
The Polski Związek Szermierczy (PZS) is the national federation for fencing in Poland. Its statute, in the consolidated text of 20 September 2025, states in §1 that it “jest polskim związkiem sportowym”, and in §4 that “Związek posiada osobowość prawną”.[4] Its mission, as its site states it, begins: “Rozpowszechnianie i dbanie o rozwój szermierki jako dyscypliny sportowej zapewniającej szeroko pojęty rozwój człowieka”.[5] The FIE lists it as “Polski Zwiazek Szermierczy”, under the European Fencing Confederation.[1]
What does the PZS govern or do?
The statute sets the federation’s aims in §9, including “Rozwój szermierki na terenie kraju”, “Organizowanie i prowadzenie współzawodnictwa sportowego w szermierce” and “Przygotowanie reprezentantów Polski do uczestnictwa w międzynarodowym współzawodnictwie sportowym”.[4]
Its board (Zarząd) appoints the national squad (“Powoływanie kadry narodowej”) and sets the rules for selecting Poland’s teams for international championships; it grants licences to fencing sections and clubs and to athletes, and the statute provides for licensing rules for coaches, instructors and judges.[4]
When was the PZS founded and where is it based?
Under §2 of its statute, “siedzibą jego władz jest miasto stołeczne Warszawa”, and “Terenem działania Związku jest obszar Rzeczpospolitej Polskiej.”[4] The statute in force is the consolidated text “po zmianach z dnia 20 września 2025 r.”[4] The federation’s site gives its address as ul. Grójecka 65A, 02-094 Warszawa,[3] and the FIE’s directory gives the same street address.[1]
How is the PZS recognised?
International federation. The Fédération Internationale d’Escrime lists the Polski Zwiazek Szermierczy in its directory, with Tadeusz Tomaszewski as president.[1] The FIE states that it has “156 affiliated Member Federations”, and lists five continental confederations that it recognises.[2] The PZS statute provides in §6 that the federation “może być członkiem międzynarodowych organizacji szermierczych”.[4]
Continental body. The FIE’s directory places it under the European Fencing Confederation, for which it gives 50 members.[1]
Logos displayed. Under the heading “Należymy do struktur”, the federation’s site shows logos linked to gov.pl/web/sport, olimpijski.pl, fie.org and eurofencing.info, beside that of its sponsor PGE.[3]
What does the PZS organise?
National championships. On 1 October 2026 the federation announced a new format for the senior national championships, in an item titled “Nowa formuła PGE Mistrzostw Polski Seniorów”, applying to the Mistrzostwa Polski Seniorów of 2027.[3]
National competition. Its statute refers to “ogólnopolskich zawodów krajowych”, nationwide national competitions,[4] and its site publishes a competition calendar (“Kalendarium zawodów”) and classifications (“Klasyfikacje”).[3]
Who are its members?
Under §11 of the statute, “Członkami Związku mogą być kluby sportowe, związki sportowe oraz inne osoby prawne”, and the board decides on admission.[4] Regional fencing associations (Okręgowe Związki Szermiercze) are listed on the federation’s site, among them the Dolnośląski, Mazowiecki, Małopolski, Śląski and Wielkopolski associations.[6] Its site also has a clubs section (“Kluby”).[3]
