What is the KVA?

The Korea Volleyball Association (KVA, 대한배구협회) is the national volleyball federation of South Korea. The Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) lists it as the “KOREA VOLLEYBALL ASSOCIATION”, with Oh Hannam as president and its website at kva.or.kr.[1] The association’s own site carries the slogan “누구나 언제나 어디서나 즐길 수 있는 배구” — volleyball that anyone can enjoy, anytime, anywhere.[2]

What does the KVA govern or do?

The association covers both competitive and recreational volleyball: its competition pages are divided into 전문체육 (specialist, competitive sport), 생활체육 (sport for all), a division league, international records and the national teams.[2] In its president’s greeting it states that it will appoint coaches with strengths in national-team development to prepare for the Olympic Games, the Asian Games and world championships, and that it plans to host an international volleyball tournament every year.[4]

It registers teams, players, coaches and referees, and publishes registration status for each.[5]

When was the KVA founded and where is it based?

The association’s history records its founding on 25 March 1946 as “대한배구협회”, with Cho Dong-sik as first president, and the first national championship in May 1946.[3] It became an incorporated association (사단법인) in November 2007, and in February 2016 the 사단법인 대한민국배구협회 was launched by merging the former KVA with the former national recreational volleyball federation (국민생활체육전국배구연합회).[3]

Its address is Room 224, Olympic Center New Building, 424 Olympic-ro, Songpa-gu, Seoul.[1][2]

How is the KVA recognised?

FIVB. The association’s history records that it joined the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) in October 1959.[3]

AVC. The Asian Volleyball Confederation’s directory of national federations lists the Korea Volleyball Association under its Eastern Asia Zonal Association, with its president, Seoul address and contact details.[1] The association’s site links to the AVC and to 대한체육회, the national sports body, among its related organisations.[3]

What does the KVA organise?

National championships. The association records that the first national championship was held in May 1946 and has been held every year since; it is now called the 종별배구선수권대회.[3]

Leagues. Its site links to a division league for club volleyball.[2] Professional volleyball is run separately: the association’s history records the launch in October 2004 of the professional game under KOVO (한국배구연맹), and the founding of the 한국실업배구연맹, the federation for company teams, in March 2010.[3]

Who are its members?

The association publishes annual registration status for teams, players, coaches and referees. Its most recent team-registration notice, “2026년도 팀등록현황(20260930)”, is dated 30 September 2026.[5]

Since the 2016 merger its membership spans competitive and recreational volleyball, combining the former KVA with the former national recreational volleyball federation.[3]
