What is the KNAS?
The Koninklijke Nederlandse Algemene Schermbond (KNAS) is the national federation for fencing in the Netherlands. It describes itself as a “vereniging van verenigingen”, an association of clubs.[4] The FIE lists it, under the European Fencing Confederation, as “Kon. Nederlandse Algemene Schermbon”, with the postal address “3430 GB Nieuwegein, Postbus 2650”.[1] The predicate “Koninklijke” (royal) in its name dates, by its own account, from 1923.[4]
What does the KNAS govern or do?
The federation’s site has a section for entries to international competition, titled “Internationale aanmeldingen (FIE, EFC)”, and a forum topic for results, titled “Uitslagen FIE en EFC en IWAS”.[3] It keeps the national competition calendar (wedstrijdkalender), its regulations (reglementen), a board page (bestuur) and a list of its member clubs (verenigingenlijst).[3] Its membership figures come, it says, from its online membership administration, OnzeRelaties.[4]
When was the KNAS founded and where is it based?
The federation states: “De KNAS is op 1 februari 1908 opgericht als N.A.S.: Nederlandsche Amateur Schermbond en bestaat nu dus 118 jaar.”[4] It records the royal title separately: “In 1923 werd de NAS het predikaat ‘koninklijk’ verleend.”[4] The FIE’s directory gives the federation’s address as Postbus 2650, 3430 GB Nieuwegein.[1]
How is the KNAS recognised?
International federation. The Fédération Internationale d’Escrime lists the Kon. Nederlandse Algemene Schermbon in its directory, with Roeland Reesinck as president.[1] The FIE states that it has “156 affiliated Member Federations”, and lists five continental confederations that it recognises.[2]
Continental body. The FIE’s directory places the federation under the European Fencing Confederation, for which it gives 50 members.[1] The KNAS site has a section for entries to FIE and EFC competitions.[3]
What does the KNAS organise?
National championships. The federation’s site carries pages for its 2027 national championships, titled “NK’s 2027”, “NK Senioren 2027”, “NK Veteranen 2027” and “NJK 2027”.[3]
Calendar and results. It publishes the national competition calendar (wedstrijdkalender) on its site, and posts results of the international FIE, EFC and IWAS events its fencers enter in a forum topic.[3]
Who are its members?
The federation states that it consists, as a “vereniging van verenigingen”, of 73 clubs (verenigingen), with 2,711 affiliated fencers in total.[4] It notes of those figures: “Deze getallen zijn actuele gegevens die rechtstreeks uit ons online ledenadministratie OnzeRelaties komen.” (figures as shown on 10 October 2026).[4] Its site publishes the list of its member clubs.[3]
