What is the Japan Sumo Association?

The Nihon Sumo Kyokai governs professional sumo — a public-interest corporation under Japan's education ministry, running the stables, the elders' system, the six grand tournaments and the banzuke itself from the Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.[1] [2]

Why does it matter?

Because in sumo the association is the record: rank, tournament results, promotion and even a wrestler's ring name are all its rulings — one of the most complete and most traditional credential systems in world sport.[2] [3]
