What is the FRNPM?

The Federația Română de Natație și Pentatlon Modern (FRNPM), the Romanian Swimming and Modern Pentathlon Federation, is the national body for swimming and several other aquatic disciplines in Romania, and also for modern pentathlon. Article 4 of its statutes describes it as “persoană juridică de drept privat, de utilitate publică, autonomă, neguvernamentală, apolitică și fără scop lucrativ” — a private-law legal person of public utility, autonomous, non-governmental, non-political and non-profit.[5]

What does the FRNPM govern or do?

The FRNPM’s site lists six areas of activity: swimming, diving, modern pentathlon, open water, artistic (synchronised) swimming and masters.[4] Its statutes make it the body that organises and controls these activities nationally, including swimming competitions, diving, modern pentathlon, open-water and synchronised swimming.[5] The federation’s site carries pages for the national squads, which it calls “loturi”, and for the clubs it accredits.[4] Water polo in Romania has its own body, which European Aquatics lists separately as the Romanian Water Polo Federation.[1]

When was the FRNPM founded and where is it based?

European Aquatics gives 1930 as the year of the federation’s foundation.[2] The FRNPM’s statutes record that it was reorganised in 2001 under Law 69/2000 on physical education and sport.[5] Article 10 places its seat in Bucharest, at Strada Maior Coravu 34-36, sector 2, the same address European Aquatics lists for it.[5][2]

How is the FRNPM recognised?

European Aquatics. European Aquatics’ directory of member federations lists two Romanian members: the Romanian Swimming and Modern Pentathlon Federation, listed first, and the Romanian Water Polo Federation.[1] European Aquatics describes itself as the governing body for aquatic sports representing Europe, affiliated to World Aquatics.[3]

World Aquatics. Article 13 of the FRNPM’s statutes states “F.R.N.P.M. este afiliată la F.I.N.A. și L.E.N.” — affiliated to FINA, now World Aquatics, and to LEN, the former name of European Aquatics.[5]

What does the FRNPM organise?

The FRNPM’s site presents it as the organiser of Romania’s national championships across its disciplines and as the body that manages the national squads.[4] Under its statutes, it organises and controls the national programme of swimming competitions, diving, modern pentathlon, open-water and synchronised swimming.[5]

Who are its members?

The FRNPM’s statutes name as members the sports clubs with swimming, diving or modern pentathlon sections, the county swimming and pentathlon associations and the Bucharest municipal association.[5] Its online directory of affiliated clubs can be filtered by county and by discipline; the clubs it lists include ACS Amiral in Bucharest and ACS Diamond Wolves in Pitești.[6]
