What is European Aquatics?
European Aquatics is the continental governing body for aquatic sports in Europe — swimming, diving, water polo, artistic swimming, open water and high diving — and one of the five continental confederations of World Aquatics. Founded in 1927 as LEN (Ligue Européenne de Natation), it adopted its current name by congress vote in September 2023.[1] [3]
What does European Aquatics govern?
It sanctions and governs continental competition in all aquatic disciplines, ratifies European records, runs officiating and development programs, and represents Europe's federations within World Aquatics.[2]
When was it founded and where is it based?
Founded in Bologna in 1927, the confederation has been headquartered in Nyon, Switzerland since 2015.[1]
What competitions does European Aquatics organize?
- European Aquatics Championships — the continental championships across the aquatic disciplines, among the oldest continental titles in world sport (first swimming edition 1926).[1] [2]
- European Short Course Swimming Championships (25 m).[2]
- European junior championships in each discipline.[2]
- Club competitions — notably the water polo Champions League.[2]
How is European Aquatics structured?
Its members are the 52 national aquatics federations of Europe (including Israel, grouped with Europe for Olympic-sport purposes); a congress of members elects the Bureau and president.[1] European champions and record holders certified by the confederation hold the continent's official titles.[2]
