What is the FPE?
The Federação Portuguesa de Esgrima (FPE) is the national federation for fencing in Portugal. The FIE lists it as “Federacao Portuguesa de Esgrima”, under the European Fencing Confederation, at “1050-038 LISBOA, Avenida de Berna n 31, 1 Dt”.[1] Its history page states: “A Federação Portuguesa de Esgrima foi criada em 1922, na cidade de Lisboa.”[4] Its site gives the address Avenida de Berna, nº 31, 1º Drt, Lisboa, and the contact [email protected].[3]
What does the FPE govern or do?
The federation’s site has sections for national teams (“Seleções Nacionais”), the national ranking, results, refereeing (“Arbitragem”), training (“Formação”), regulations and circulars.[3]
Its Orgãos Sociais page, which links a document titled “Corpos Sociais 2025-2028”, lists its governing bodies as a president and a Direcção, a Mesa da Assembleia, a Conselho de Arbitragem, a Conselho Fiscal, a Conselho de Justiça and a Conselho de Disciplina.[5]
When was the FPE founded and where is it based?
The federation’s history page dates its creation to 1922, in Lisbon.[4] The same page records competitive fencing in Portugal before that date, including the first national épée championship (“o primeiro Campeonato Nacional de Espada”), held at Campo Grande in Lisbon in 1908, in which, it says, “Participam 25 atiradores de todo o país”.[4] The federation is based at Avenida de Berna nº 31 in Lisbon, the address on its own site and in the FIE’s directory.[3][1]
How is the FPE recognised?
International federation. The Fédération Internationale d’Escrime lists the Federacao Portuguesa de Esgrima in its directory, with Frederico Valarinho named as president.[1] The FIE states that it has “156 affiliated Member Federations”, and lists five continental confederations that it recognises.[2]
Continental body. The FIE’s directory places the federation under the European Fencing Confederation, for which it gives 50 members.[1]
National partners. The federation’s home page shows, in its “Parcerias” section, logos labelled “Comité Olimpico de Portugal” and “IPDJ”, among its partners.[3]
What does the FPE organise?
National competition. The federation publishes the national competition calendar (“Calendário”), the national ranking and competition results on its site.[3]
National teams. It keeps a section on Portugal’s national teams (“Seleções Nacionais”).[3]
Officials. Its refereeing council, the Conselho de Arbitragem, is one of the governing bodies its Orgãos Sociais page lists.[5]
Who are its members?
The federation’s site has a section on where fencing can be practised in Portugal, headed “Onde Praticar?”.[3] Its Orgãos Sociais page lists a Mesa da Assembleia with a president, a vice-president, a secretary and a substitute, alongside the Direcção and the federation’s councils.[5] The federation is itself one of the members of the European Fencing Confederation listed by the FIE.[1]
