What is the FIS?

The Federazione Italiana Scherma (FIS), whose site runs under the name Federscherma, is the national federation for fencing in Italy. The FIE lists it as “Federazione Italiana Scherma”, under the European Fencing Confederation, at “00196 ROMA, Viale Tiziano 74”.[1] Its history page gives the current name as “Federazione Italiana Scherma (FIS)”, adopted in 1933.[4] Its site footer carries the logo of CONI.[3]

What does the FIS govern or do?

The federation keeps the registration of fencers (tesserati) and clubs (società), whose totals it publishes on its home page.[3] It runs national circuits, including the Circuito Nazionale Master, and trains technical staff, with a third-level SNaQ certification session for technicians scheduled in Rome for 31 October and 1 November 2026.[3]

Its site reports on Italian teams at international events, with reports from the 2026 Master World Championships in Tbilisi and the 2026 European Para Championships in Cardiff.[3] Its regional structure is a network of comitati regionali and delegazioni, whose presidents and delegates form a “Consulta dei Presidenti e Delegati Regionali FIS”.[5]

When was the FIS founded and where is it based?

The federation’s history page states that “il 3 Giugno 1909 venne costituita a Roma La Federazione Schermistica Italiana”, after “un tentativo senza successo effettuato a Pavia nel 1903”.[4] The same page records two renamings: “Successivamente il 5 Ottobre 1923 il nome venne modificato in Confederazione Italiana di Scherma (CIS)”, and in 1933 the name was changed again, “ulteriormente e definitivamente”, to Federazione Italiana Scherma (FIS).[4] It also notes “La contemporanea nascita nel 1913 della Federazione Internazionale di Scherma (FIE)”.[4] The federation is based at Viale Tiziano 74, 00196 Roma.[3]

How is the FIS recognised?

International federation. The Fédération Internationale d’Escrime lists the Federazione Italiana Scherma in its directory, with Luigi Mazzone as president.[1] The FIE states that it has “156 affiliated Member Federations”, and lists five continental confederations that it recognises.[2]

Continental body. The FIE’s directory places the federation under the European Fencing Confederation, for which it gives 50 members.[1]

Olympic committee. The federation’s site footer displays the logo of CONI, Italy’s national Olympic committee.[3]

What does the FIS organise?

National competitions. The federation’s home page listed the Trofeo Fair Play and the Circuito Lui & Lei in épée in Rome on 3–4 October 2026, and the first event of the Circuito Nazionale Master, in all six weapons, at Mareno di Piave on 31 October and 1 November 2026.[3]

Championships. Its site links coverage of the 2025 Assoluti, the Italian championships, in Piacenza, and of the 2025 European Championships in Genoa.[3]

Who are its members?

The federation’s home page gave, in October 2026, 21,618 tesserati (registered members), 340 società (clubs) and 37,106 competition participants (“Partecipanti gare”).[3]

Its clubs are grouped regionally. The federation’s page of regional committees lists comitati regionali, such as the C.R. Lazio, the C.R. Lombardia and the C.R. Sicilia, alongside regional delegations such as the D.R. Abruzzo and the D.R. Sardegna, and a provincial delegation, the D.P. Trento e Bolzano.[5]
