What is the FFE?

The Fédération Française d’Escrime (FFE) is the national federation for fencing in France. Its site’s description reads “Le site officiel de la Fédération Française d’Escrime. Un sport, 6 disciplines.”[3] Its history page states that the federation “est une association de loi 1901” and that “Elle est reconnue par le Ministère des Sports, des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques et par la Fédération internationale d’escrime.”[4] The FIE lists it as “Federation Francaise d’Escrime”, at “93160, 7 Porte de Neuilly NOISY LE GRAND”.[1]

What does the FFE govern or do?

The federation’s history page states that “elle est la seule association en charge de l’organisation et de la délivrance des titres de champions de France.”[4] Its fencers are counted as licence holders (licenciés), and its site offers a club finder (“Trouver un club d’escrime près de chez moi”).[4][3]

It publishes the national competition calendar, with the 2026–2027 national calendar posted on 15 April 2026, and reports on French teams abroad, including an article of 30 July 2026 on four medals for France at the World Championships in Hong Kong.[3]

When was the FFE founded and where is it based?

The federation’s history page traces its roots to 1882: “La Société d’encouragement de l’escrime, ancêtre de la Fédération française d’escrime (FFE) est fondée en 1882”.[4] It states that “La Fédération française d’escrime fut créée en 1906” following “la fusion entre la Société d’encouragement de l’escrime et l’Association escrime française.”[4] The federation marked its 120th anniversary in 2026, with an article titled “120 ans de la FFE : une histoire de champions et de championnes” on 4 May 2026.[3] The FIE’s directory places it at 7 Porte de Neuilly, Noisy-le-Grand.[1]

How is the FFE recognised?

International federation. The Fédération Internationale d’Escrime lists the Federation Francaise d’Escrime in its directory, with Rémy Delhomme as president.[1] The FIE states that it has “156 affiliated Member Federations”, and lists five continental confederations that it recognises.[2] The FFE’s history page also names the FIE among the bodies that recognise it.[4]

Continental body. The FIE’s directory places the federation under the European Fencing Confederation, for which it gives 50 members.[1]

State. The federation states that it is recognised by the Ministère des Sports, des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques.[4]

What does the FFE organise?

National championships. The federation awards the titles of champion of France, which its history page describes as its sole responsibility.[4] Its site carried coverage of the Championnats de France Para-Escrime in Courbevoie.[3]

Events in France. Its site reported on the European Championships at Antony, with a closing article dated 22 June 2026, and on the European Veterans Championships at Cognac, in an article of 18 May 2026.[3]

Who are its members?

The federation’s history page gives its own figures: “En 2025 : Plus de 60.000 licenciés, pour 760 clubs.”[4] It records its highest number of licence holders in 2008–2009, at 66,808, and a loss of 24 per cent of its licence holders in 2020–2021.[4] It also reports “plus de 50.000 jeunes en 2023” introduced to fencing through links with schools.[4] Its clubs can be looked up through the club finder on its site.[3]
