What is ČAS?
The Český atletický svaz (ČAS) is the national athletics federation of Czechia. It describes itself as a “samosprávným sdružením atletických oddílů a klubů na území České republiky” — a self-governing association of athletics sections and clubs in the Czech Republic.[4] Its general assembly elects the presidium, which is its statutory body.[4] The Athletics Integrity Unit lists it under the English name Czech Athletic Federation.[1]
What does ČAS govern or do?
ČAS sets out three statutory goals. The first is to “organizovat atletiku a atletické soutěže na území ČR a vytvářet podmínky po jejich rozvoj” — to organise athletics and athletics competitions in the Czech Republic and create the conditions for their development. The second concerns the representation of Czech athletics abroad through national teams, and the third its advocacy before state and local authorities.[4] Its site carries sections for its regional associations and for its clubs, and publishes its documents.[3]
When was ČAS founded and where is it based?
The federation’s history page states: “Stávající Český atletický svaz vznikl v roce 1993 po rozpadu ČSFR” — the present Czech Athletics Federation was formed in 1993 after the break-up of Czechoslovakia. The same page traces Czech athletics organisation to 1897, when the Česká amatérská atletická unie was founded under Austria-Hungary.[5] ČAS gives the seat of its secretariat as Prague-Dejvice (“sekretariát se sídlem v Praze - Dejvicích”).[4]
How is ČAS recognised?
World Athletics. The Athletics Integrity Unit lists the Czech Athletic Federation (code CZE, entered as Czech Republic) in its List of Categorised National Federations as of 2026, drawn up under Rule 15 of the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules, placing it in category B.[1][2]
European Athletics. The same list assigns the federation to the area association EA, European Athletics.[1] ČAS states: “ČAS je členem Světové atletiky (World Athletics) a jejím prostřednictvím kontinentální Evropské atletiky” — it is a member of World Athletics and through it of European Athletics.[4]
What does ČAS organise?
Organising athletics competitions in the Czech Republic is the first of the federation’s statutory goals.[4] In October 2026 its site carried announcements for Atlet roku 2026, the athlete-of-the-year evening scheduled for 7 November 2026 in Prague, and for the Czech Indoor Gala, scheduled for 2 February 2027 in Ostrava, together with items on the 130th Běchovice road race, the 2026 secondary-schools athletics cup (Středoškolský atletický pohár) and the final of the KP družstev mladšího žactva, a team competition for younger pupils.[3]
Who are its members?
ČAS states that it “Eviduje kolem 98 tisíc členů ve více než 380 oddílech a klubech” — it registers about 98,000 members in more than 380 sections and clubs.[4] The regional athletics associations it lists (October 2026) are those of the South Bohemian, South Moravian, Karlovy Vary, Hradec Králové, Liberec, Moravian-Silesian, Olomouc, Pardubice, Plzeň, Central Bohemian, Ústí, Vysočina and Zlín regions and the Prague Athletics Association. It states that they “plní podstatnou úlohu v samosprávě hnutí” — play an essential role in the self-government of the movement — and organise regional competitions.[6]
