What is TV 2 Danmark?

TV 2 Danmark is a Danish television company with its own Act. The consolidated text is the Bekendtgørelse af lov om TV 2/DANMARK A/S, LBK nr. 1154 af 23. september 2013, which consolidates lov nr. 438 af 10. juni 2003 with the changes made by § 2 of lov nr. 513 af 27. maj 2013. § 1 provides: “Kulturministeren bemyndiges til at stifte et aktieselskab ved navn TV 2/DANMARK A/S, hvis aktiekapital tegnes af staten.”[1]

Under § 2 the company is to “drive medievirksomhed og anden hermed beslægtet eller relateret virksomhed” on “et forretningsmæssigt grundlag”, and it “skal drive public service-programvirksomhed, såfremt der er meddelt tilladelse hertil” under Chapter 6a of the radio and television Act.[1]

The corporate site gives the company as TV 2 Danmark A/S, Rugårdsvej 25, 5000 Odense C, CVR 10 41 34 94.[2] State ownership is current as well as original: in its 2025 results of 26 March 2026 the company stated that “Det indstilles til generalforsamlingen at udlodde et udbytte til den danske stat på 252 mio.kr.”[3]

What does TV 2 Danmark cover?

Sport was part of the station's design. Lex records that TV 2 was to be “en entreprisestation uden anden egenproduktion end nyheder og sport”, and that “TV 2 delte i begyndelsen rettighederne til de direkte transmissioner fra Tour de France med DR, men overtog dem gradvist helt.” Lex dates the TV 2 Sport channel to 2007.[7]

Current rights are dated in the company's own announcements. On 23 September 2026 TV 2 announced a “fireårig aftale med Danmarks Cykle Union (DCU) om tv-rettighederne til Danmark Rundt frem til 2030”; its director of sport and production named TV 2 Regionerne as partners in the coverage.[6] Its half-year report of 26 August 2026 names “VM i fodbold, EM i herrehåndbold” among the drivers of its streaming viewing and of its content costs in the first half of 2026.[5]

Bold.dk's football television guide lists four TV 2 services among those it tracks: TV2, TV2 Play, TV2 Sport and TV2 Sport X.[8] TV 2's sport site on the sport.tv2.dk subdomain is disallowed to automated retrieval and could not be read.

How large is TV 2 Danmark's audience?

Danish television is measured by Nielsen under its Total Audience measurement. For week 38 of 2026, among persons aged 3 and over, five of Nielsen's top ten programmes were on TV 2, led by Som sunket i jorden with 771,000 viewers; none is a live sports broadcast by title. That is one week's reading, not a period average.[9]

The company's own figures are financial and subscription figures, and are reported as its own. It gives 2025 revenue as 4.346 mio. kr., up 4.6 per cent, and states that TV 2 Play “har mere end 1,2 mio. abonnementer”.[3] It gives first-half 2026 revenue as 2.206 mio. kr., up 5.1 per cent.[5] Neither release gives a Nielsen audience figure for a sports event.[3][5]

Reporters Without Borders states that “The Danish audience has a particular preference for the public media — Denmarks Radio and TV2”. That is the monitor's characterisation, not a measured figure.[4]

Since when has TV 2 Danmark existed?

Lex opens its entry: “TV 2 Danmark er en dansk tv-station, der sendte første gang fra Kvægtorvet i Odense lørdag den 1. oktober 1988.” It records that the law creating the station was passed by the Folketing on 30 May 1986 by 73 votes to 71, and that from 2003 TV 2 was “organiseret som et statsejet aktieselskab”.[7]

The statute agrees on the 2003 step. The company Act consolidated in 2013 is lov nr. 438 af 10. juni 2003, whose § 1 authorised the minister to found TV 2/DANMARK A/S with share capital subscribed by the state.[1]

So three dates are kept apart here: 30 May 1986 for the founding law, 1 October 1988 for the first broadcast, both per Lex, and 10 June 2003 for the Act under which the present company was formed.[7][1]

Why does TV 2 Danmark matter in Denmark's sport?

It matters first because sport is written into its history as one of its two original fields of in-house production, and because it took over, in stages, the live Tour de France coverage it first shared with DR, as Lex records.[7]

It matters second because it holds dated domestic rights. The Danmark Rundt agreement with Danmarks Cykle Union runs to 2030, and the company's first-half report for 2026 cites the men's handball European Championship and the football World Cup as drivers of its streaming viewing.[6][5]

It matters third because it is state-owned and statutory: its Act fixes the company form and requires public-service programming where a permission has been granted under the radio and television Act.[1] RSF names it as one of the two public media in the Danish market.[4]
