What is TRT Spor?
TRT Spor is the sports service of Türkiye Radyo Televizyon Kurumu, the country's public broadcaster, and it runs as a television channel with an accompanying news site at trtspor.com.tr. The site's own corporate links point to TRT's institutional pages, and its editorial output is organised as a sports news portal rather than as a schedule listing.[1]
The corporation describes its own origin in these terms: “Türkiye Radyo Televizyon Kurumu, 1 Mayıs 1964 tarihinde, kamu adına radyo ve televizyon yayınlarını gerçekleştirmek amacıyla ve özel yasayla, özerk bir kamu tüzel kişiliğine sahip olarak kuruldu.” That is the corporation's account of itself, and its history page does not print the number of the law it refers to.[2] The statute in force is Kanun No. 2954, Türkiye Radyo ve Televizyon Kanunu, adopted 11/11/1983 and published in the Resmî Gazete of 14/11/1983, No. 18221, second repeat issue. The consolidated text read here shows that its Articles 8 and 9 were repealed by KHK-703 of 9/7/2018 and that Article 35, on revenues, was repealed with effect from 1/1/1985 by Kanun No. 3093, so the institutional and funding provisions the law originally carried are no longer in it.[3]
Television broadcasting in the country is licensed by the Radyo ve Televizyon Üst Kurulu under Kanun No. 6112, Radyo ve Televizyonların Kuruluş ve Yayın Hizmetleri Hakkında Kanun, adopted 15/2/2011 and published in the Resmî Gazete of 3/3/2011, No. 27863, whose Article 27(1) provides that “Medya hizmet sağlayıcı kuruluşlar, kablo, uydu, karasal ve benzeri ortamlardan yayın yapabilmeleri için her bir yayın tekniği ve ortamına ilişkin Üst Kuruldan ayrı ayrı lisans almak zorundadır”.[4]
What does TRT Spor cover?
The site's standing sections are football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, motorsport and a grouped other-sports section that carries athletics, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, handball, winter sports, gymnastics, combat sports and water sports. Within football it carries the Süper Lig, the European club competitions and international tournaments; within basketball it carries the domestic men's and women's competitions alongside the NBA and the European club competitions.[1]
That breadth distinguishes the service from the outlets built around the Süper Lig. The federation's own competition statute for 2024–2025 defines the Süper Lig as a nineteen-club double round-robin whose naming rests exclusively with the federation's board, and that competition anchors most Turkish sports coverage; TRT Spor's sections extend past it into the Olympic sports in which the country's international record sits.[5]
How large is TRT Spor's audience?
No audited audience figure for the channel could be retrieved. The recognised television currency is TİAK, Televizyon İzleme Araştırmaları A.Ş., which describes itself as a joint-stock company formed in December 2010 “televizyon izleme araştırmalarını organize etmek ve denetlemek amacıyla”, with an advertisers' association, an advertising agencies' association and two groups of broadcasters among its shareholders and TRT 1 and TRT Haber named among the channels in one of those groups.[6] TİAK's 2024 yearbook reports a panel of 4,327 households at 31 December 2024 and an annual average of 4,314, against a universe of 58,367,000 people aged five and over in 17,729,000 households. Its published channel tables are top-ten rankings by rating and share for all-day and prime-time dayparts, and no channel-level share for a sports channel could be read from them.[7]
The regulator publishes survey data on the same question by a different method. The Radyo ve Televizyon Üst Kurulu's Medyametre Medya Kullanım Alışkanlıkları Araştırması 2024 was conducted face to face with 15,766 respondents aged 15 and over across 26 provinces, with fieldwork in January–August 2024, and lists “Spor Yorum Programları” among the television programme types watched at 35.7 per cent.[8] That is a figure for a programme genre, not for this channel.
Since when has TRT Spor existed?
The corporation states that it was constituted on 1 May 1964 by special law as an autonomous public legal person, and its history page also refers to a first radio broadcast on 6 May 1927 and a first television broadcast on 31 January 1968.[2] Those are the corporation's own claims about itself and they are reported here as such; founding, constitution by statute and the start of broadcasting are three different dates and the page keeps them apart.
The statute now in force post-dates all of them: Kanun No. 2954 was adopted on 11/11/1983 and published on 14/11/1983.[3] No launch date for the sports channel itself, as distinct from the corporation, could be retrieved from TRT's own pages.
Why does TRT Spor matter in Turkey's sport?
It is the sports output of the body constituted by statute to broadcast on behalf of the public, which puts it on a different footing from the commercial rights holders: its authority comes from Kanun No. 2954 rather than from a tender, and its licensing sits with the Radyo ve Televizyon Üst Kurulu under Kanun No. 6112 like every other broadcaster's.[3][4]
Press-freedom context is reported here and not adopted. Reporters Without Borders places Türkiye 163rd of 180 countries in its 2026 World Press Freedom Index with a score of 27.94, and its indicator scores are 20.16 political, 26.78 economic, 31.20 legal, 28.93 social and 32.61 security. The opening sentence of the Media landscape section of its Türkiye country page reads: “With 90% of national media outlets under government control, the public has turned towards media outlets of varying political stances that are independent and critical of power over the past five years to learn about the impact of the economic and political crisis on the country.” That is RSF's characterisation, at country level; it is quoted here as published and no inference from it is drawn about this outlet.[9]
