What is Titan Sports?
Titan Sports (体坛周报) is a Chinese-language sports newspaper published twice a week, together with a news website at titan24.com and a digital platform and app branded 体坛+ (Titan Plus).[1][4] The subscription notice its publisher issued on 13 December 2024 names 体坛传媒集团 — Titan Media Group — as the publisher and sets out the paper’s schedule, prices and distribution for the 2025 subscription year.[1]
The paper began as a provincial state publication. A profile of it carried on 29 August 2003 records first publication on 1 July 1988 in Hunan province.[2][5] An account published by 人民文摘, a People’s Daily title, on 1 August 2009 records that the paper was a publication of the Hunan Provincial Sports Bureau and that it received its publication licence in November 1988 with annual funding of 50,000 yuan.[3] First publication, licensing and the later reorganisation of the business into Titan Media Group are separate steps, and the sources retrieved date them separately.
The current shareholding of Titan Media Group could not be retrieved from a corporate filing or registry record, so no statement of who owns the publisher today is made here.
What does Titan Sports cover?
The title is a general sports paper rather than a single-sport one. The 2003 profile describes it at that time as appearing three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, at 24 pages, and sets it within a stable of one newspaper and three magazines, among them 足球周刊 (Soccer Weekly) and 全体育 (All Sports).[2]
The publisher’s notice for 2025 gives the shape of the paper more recently: 61 issues across the year, 49 of them on Mondays at 3 yuan and 12 on Fridays at 20 yuan, with one Friday edition — a European club-competition guide dated 19 September — priced at 25 yuan. The notice lists twelve special editions built around domestic league guides, international tournaments and the NBA, and a full-year subscription at 392 yuan bundled with membership of the digital edition.[1] The mix of special editions is itself a statement of the paper’s subject range: domestic football, European club football and North American basketball.
The outlet’s news site at titan24.com, as retrieved on 19 September 2026, carried football, tennis and table tennis reporting under bylined articles.[4]
How large is Titan Sports’s audience?
No audited circulation certificate for Titan Sports could be retrieved, and no continuously published Chinese newspaper circulation currency comparable to the audited figures issued in some other countries could be retrieved either. That is a limitation of the evidence available for this title, and the figures below are given with the dates and the sources that carry them rather than as a current measure.
Two dated figures appear in the sources retrieved, and both are historical. The 2003 profile states that weekly circulation was stable at over 4 million copies; that is the publication’s own account of itself and is reported here as its claim.[2] 人民文摘 reported in August 2009 that the issues published on 8 October 2001, the day the China men’s national football team qualified for the FIFA World Cup, sold 5,078,471 copies across the regular and commemorative printings, and that several issues during that qualifying period exceeded two million copies.[3] That count rests on that single source and is reported as such.
What the publisher does publish currently is structural rather than an audience measure: the number of issues in the subscription year, the cover prices, the annual subscription price and the postal distribution code.[1]
Since when has Titan Sports existed?
The 2003 profile dates first publication to 1 July 1988.[2][5] The 人民文摘 account of August 2009 dates the publication licence to November 1988 and records the paper’s starting annual funding at 50,000 yuan.[3] Those are two different events and the page keeps them apart.
The publication schedule has changed over that period. In 2003 the paper appeared three times a week.[2] For the 2025 subscription year the publisher set two publication days a week and 61 issues in all.[1] The paper was therefore still appearing in print on a fixed schedule through the 2025 subscription year, and the outlet’s news site was live when retrieved on 19 September 2026.[4]
Why does Titan Sports matter in China’s sport?
Its print distribution is national rather than provincial. The 2003 profile records editorial offices in Changsha, Beijing and Shenzhen, reporting stations in Beijing and Shanghai, printing points in 30 cities, and air-freight distribution to cities with concentrated Chinese populations in Japan, Australia, Canada and the United States.[2] The 2025 arrangement keeps the national reach in a different form, through China Post subscription and a paired digital edition.[1]
The title also sits inside the Chinese state publishing system, and its governance has been the subject of a formal investigation. 人民文摘 records that in March 2009 the paper’s head, Qu Youyuan, and a vice-president responsible for finance travelled to Changsha at the request of the Hunan Sports Bureau, and that by April 2009 both had been placed under shuanggui, the Communist Party’s internal investigative detention measure. The same account describes the matter as concerning suspected economic problems and states that no official conclusion had been announced when it was published on 1 August 2009.[3] Any later determination could not be retrieved, so the matter is reported here at the stage the source records.
For a reader trying to establish what a Chinese sports journalist has published, the title is useful because its output is dated and paginated in a fixed print schedule and carried in a parallel digital edition, both of which the publisher documents issue by issue.[1]
