What is Sýn Sport?

Sýn Sport is the sport television service of Sýn hf. The company's 2025 annual accounts list “SÝN Sport” among the brands through which it serves customers.[1] Its home page presents the company as offering internet service, television entertainment and “það besta í heimi íþrótta”, and advertises “Yfir 300 beinar útsendingar á SÝN Sport”, without a period.[2]

The service is several channels. On 18 September 2026 Vísir's listings used the names Sýn Sport, Sýn Sport Ísland, Sýn Sport Ísland 2, Sýn Sport Ísland 3, Sýn Sport Viaplay and Sýn Sport 4.[3] This page gives syn.is as the domain because the channels are sold and presented on paths of the parent company's site.[4]

The same accounts give Sýn's largest shareholders at 31 December 2025 as Gavia Invest ehf. with 18.2%, Gildi lífeyrissjóður with 15.9% and Skel fjárfestingafélag hf. with 10.1%.[1]

What does Sýn Sport cover?

English football. Vísir reported on 20 June 2024 that “Sýn hefur tryggt sér sýningarréttinn að ensku úrvalsdeildinni frá keppnistímabilinu 2025/26 til 2027/28”, then for its Stöð 2 Sport channels.[6] It reported on 22 July 2025 that the cheapest package including the Premier League cost 11,990 krónur a month and also carried the UEFA Champions League.[5] Sýn's 2025 accounts state that the company took over the rights under the banner “Enski boltinn hefur aldrei verið stærri” and that “eru allir leikir sýndir í beinni útsendingu.”[1] The Premier League page on syn.is presents three studio programmes around the matches: Doc Zone, Stórleikirnir and Messan, the last described as covering “helstu kraftaverk og syndir helgarinnar”.[4]

Icelandic football. On 18 September 2026 the listings gave three women's Besta deild matches on the three Sýn Sport Ísland channels: FH against Stjarnan at 16:20, ÍBV against Þróttur at 17:05 and Fram against Víkingur at 17:50.[3]

Other sport. The same listings carried the Bundesliga on Sýn Sport Viaplay and the BMW PGA Championship on Sýn Sport 4.[3] Sýn's home page also sells KKÍ TV, which it describes as a subscription giving access to channels “þar sem sýnt verður frá öllum leikjum í 1. og 2 deild karla og kvenna”; in Icelandic basketball those divisions sit below the top-tier Bónus-deild.[2]

How large is Sýn Sport's audience?

No audience figure for Sýn Sport could be retrieved. Gallup á Íslandi is the broadcast measurement currency in Iceland. It describes the method: “Frá árinu 2008 hefur Gallup mælt sjónvarpsáhorf og útvarpshlustun með rafrænum hætti fyrir ljósvakamiðla og birtingafyrirtæki”, using the PPM meter with Kantar Media, and “Í Fjölmiðlahópnum eru 500 manns á aldrinum 12-80 ára sem bera PPM-mælitækið á sér frá því þeir vakna á morgnana þar til þeir fara að sofa á kvöldin.”[7] Channel-level results are not on Gallup's public pages, and Sýn's pages, as retrieved, publish no subscriber count.[2]

What can be reported is price, volume and cost as the seller states them: the 11,990-krónur monthly package with the Premier League, per Vísir's July 2025 report; Sýn's own claim of over 300 live broadcasts; and, in its accounts, “Í árslok 2025 nam skuldbinding vegna sýningarrétta utan efnahags 1.516 millj. kr.”, a figure for all broadcast rights, not sport alone.[5][2][1]

Since when has Sýn Sport existed?

The name dates from June 2025. Vísir reported on 12 June 2025 that “SÝN Sport er nýtt heiti á Stöð 2 Sport”.[8] Sýn's 2025 accounts describe the step: “Á árinu 2025 tók Sýn stórt og metnaðarfullt skref í sameiningu miðla- og fjarskiptastarfsemi þegar vörumerkin Vodafone, Stöð 2, Stöð 2+ og Stöð 2 Sport voru sameinuð undir merkjum Sýnar.”[1] No launch date for the earlier Stöð 2 Sport channels was retrieved. Vísir's June 2024 report stated that Sýn's partnership with the Premier League went back to 1997; that is the company's account of its own history.[6]

The group changed its news output on 31 August 2026, when Sýn announced that “Sýn hefur ákveðið að hætta framleiðslu og útsendingu sjónvarpsfrétta frá og með 1. september 2026.”[9] The announcement, as retrieved, does not mention the sport channels.

Why does Sýn Sport matter in Iceland's sport?

It holds the Premier League in Iceland for three seasons from 2025/26, per its sister site's reports, and its owner states that every match is shown live.[6][1]

It shows Icelandic club football live: the 18 September 2026 listings put three women's Besta deild matches on its Iceland channels in one afternoon.[3]

And it is the route through which KKÍ TV, carrying the divisions below the Bónus-deild in Icelandic basketball, is sold.[2]
