What is Sky Sport Austria?

Sky Sport Austria is the sport channel and website of Sky's Austrian company. The imprint of skysportaustria.at names the media owner as Sky Österreich Fernsehen GmbH, Rivergate, Handelskai 92, Vienna, registered under FN 303804x, and states that the website “informiert über Aktivitäten und Angebote der Sky Österreich Fernsehen GmbH, insbesondere aus den Bereichen Film, Serien und Sport”.[1] The imprint of the parent site sky.at describes the company: “Die Sky Österreich Fernsehen GmbH ist ein österreichischer Privatrundfunkveranstalter und bietet insbesondere Dienstleistungen aus dem Bereich Pay-TV an.”[2]

Both imprints give the same disclosure of ownership: “100 Prozent Sky Österreich Verwaltung GmbH, diese 100 Prozent Sky Deutschland Fernsehen GmbH & Co. KG”. Both name the Kommunikationsbehörde Austria as the supervisory authority.[1][2] The RTR describes KommAustria as the body that “reguliert und beaufsichtigt den Markt der Radio-, Fernseh- und vergleichbaren Online-Angebote in Österreich sowie den ORF und dessen Tochterfirmen”.[6]

The group above that chain changed in 2026. Bertelsmann announced on 1 June 2026: “RTL Group has confirmed the completion of its acquisition of Sky Deutschland (DACH), effective today, June 1, 2026.” It added: “Upon closing, RTL Group has fully acquired Sky's businesses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, including customer relationships in Luxembourg, Liechtenstein and South Tyrol on a cash-free and debt-free basis.”[3] The imprint read on 26 September 2026 names the chain only as far as Sky Deutschland Fernsehen GmbH & Co. KG.[1]

What does Sky Sport Austria cover?

On 26 September 2026 the site's navigation listed football, Formula 1, tennis, ice hockey, golf, winter sport, basketball, American football and MotoGP, and its latest items, of 24 September, included Austria's Nations League match against Israel, the Austrian cyclist Felix Gall and friendlies of ADMIRAL Bundesliga clubs.[9]

Austrian football. The Österreichische Fußball-Bundesliga announced on 4 September 2025 that Sky's rights for the seasons 2026–27 to 2029–30 cover “alle 195 Spiele live im Pay-TV auf Sky Sport Austria”, highlight rights to all matches in the paid area, clips online and on social media, and news reporting on all matches.[4] The same announcement records that the ORF secured four live matches a season co-exclusively for free-to-air television.[4]

German football. Sky's Austrian site states that it holds rights to the German Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga for Austria for the seasons 2025–26 to 2028–29, showing 538 of the 617 matches of the two divisions live and in full: “Die neue Rechteperiode gilt ab der Saison 2025/26 bis zur Saison 2028/29.” It states that the rights extend beyond Austria to Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, South Tyrol and East Belgium.[5] That is the broadcaster's own account of its rights.

How large is Sky Sport Austria's audience?

Television audiences in Austria are measured by AGTT Teletest. The ORF's media research department, which publishes the annual market shares, names the ORF group's 34.6 per cent and ServusTV's 4.7 per cent for 2025 on its page, and gives no figure for Sky Sport Austria there.[7] No channel share for Sky Sport Austria was retrieved from the currency.

The only subscriber figure retrieved is the owner's, and it is for a larger unit. Bertelsmann's announcement of 1 June 2026 states: “The transaction brings together two of the most recognisable media brands in the DACH region, creating a future-ready entertainment business with around 12.3 million paying subscribers.”[3] That figure covers the combined RTL and Sky business across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, not Austria alone, and it is the owner's own figure.

Since when has Sky Sport Austria existed?

No launch date for the channel was retrieved from Sky's own pages. The company's registration, FN 303804x, and its imprint establish the operator, not a start date.[1]

Sky's relationship with Austrian league football is dated by the league. Its announcement of 4 September 2025 is headed “Verlängerung der Partnerschaft zwischen der Bundesliga und Sky Österreich”, an extension of the partnership, and runs the new term to 2029–30.[4] Sky's own page dates its German Bundesliga rights from 2025–26.[5]

The ownership above Sky Deutschland changed on 1 June 2026, when, as Bertelsmann announced, RTL Group completed its acquisition.[3]

Why does Sky Sport Austria matter in Austria's sport?

From 2026–27 to 2029–30 it is the channel on which, by the league's announcement, every top-division match is shown live; the free-to-air share is four live matches a season on the ORF.[4] It also carries, by its own account, 538 of the 617 matches of the German Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga live from 2025–26 to 2028–29.[5]

Its ownership sits within a market that a monitoring body describes as concentrated. The Media Pluralism Monitor's Austria 2026 page states: “Concentration in the audiovisual, radio and newspaper sectors is extremely high: the four largest players hold between 70 and 92% of the respective markets in terms of revenue and audience.”[8] That is the monitor's characterisation. Since 1 June 2026 the channel's group has been RTL Group, as Bertelsmann announced.[3]
