What is Nikkan Sports?
Nikkan Sports is Japan's first sports daily newspaper, founded on 6 March 1946 and now part of the Asahi Shimbun group — the paper that created the Japanese supōtsu shinbun genre in the immediate postwar years, initially around professional baseball.[1]
What does it cover?
Nippon Professional Baseball above all — box scores, farm-league news, transfers and player-by-player game notes at a depth that exists in no English-language source — plus sumo day by day through each honbasho, horse racing, soccer and motorsport.[1] [2]
Why does it matter?
Because two sports on this site — Japanese baseball and sumo — have their primary documentary record in Japanese, and Nikkan Sports is the fullest daily version of it. Sumo results in particular are published by the association in Japanese only.[1] [2]
