What is Nationwide News Network?
Nationwide News Network is a Jamaican broadcast news organisation that transmits as Nationwide 90FM and publishes at nationwideradiojm.com. Its schedule is built around news and current affairs rather than music: morning and evening news programmes, the talk strands Cliff Hughes Online and Talk Up Radio, lifestyle programming, and a sports programme, SportsNation Live.[1] The network states its aim is to be "Jamaica's principal provider of accurate broadcast news (hard and soft), sports, current affairs, business and entertainment" — its own statement of intent, carried here as such.[1]
Its founder and chief executive is the broadcaster Cliff Hughes, named as such in reporting by the Jamaica Observer, which also records an Emmy award he received in 2003 for a television documentary.[2] The station is not part of the RJRGLEANER Communications Group, which makes it one of the separately owned national news voices in a Jamaican media market otherwise concentrated in two proprietors.
What does Nationwide News Network cover?
The network runs a standing sports section with its own by-lined reporters rather than wire copy. On 11 September 2026 it carried the start of the ISSA schoolboy football season across five rural venues, Jamaica's silver medal in the mixed 4x100 metres relay at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, a community basketball league final, and a preview of the schoolboy Manning Cup, filed by the named reporters Orane Buchanan and Alrick Swaby.[3]
The mix on a single day — schoolboy football, senior athletics and community basketball — is characteristic. Domestic school sport and club-level competition get the same treatment as international championships, and the community basketball league result is the kind of item the national dailies do not always carry. SportsNation Live gives the sports desk a daily on-air slot in addition to the website.[1] [3] The operation is reporting rather than record-keeping: no standing tables, records or historical results are maintained on the site.
What are Nationwide News Network's reach and standing?
No audited Jamaican radio audience measurement covering Nationwide could be retrieved, and the network publishes no circulation or listenership figure of its own. Its standing is therefore argued from structure: a national FM news service, a named founder-proprietor who is one of the country's recognised broadcasters, staff sports reporters filing under their own by-lines, and a daily sports programme on the schedule.[1] [2] [3]
The network's ownership position is the part that carries weight on a Jamaican list. Because the Gleaner, The Star, Television Jamaica and five radio stations sit under one group, the number of nationally distributed Jamaican news organisations with a separate owner is small, and Nationwide is one of them. A story reported by Nationwide and by an RJRGLEANER outlet is two proprietors; the same story across three RJRGLEANER brands is one.[4] Its sports file is produced by staff reporters and published under their by-lines through the season; no audience figure for the station could be sourced.
Since when?
A founding date for Nationwide News Network could not be confirmed from a primary source. The network's own About page sets out its mission, values and programme list but gives no year of establishment, no founder credit and no frequency history.[1] Reporting in the Jamaica Observer in August 2022 identifies Cliff Hughes as founder and chief executive and describes the organisation expanding from radio into video production, but likewise carries no founding year.[2]
What can be dated is the current state of the operation: as at September 2026 the network was broadcasting as Nationwide 90FM, publishing a daily sports file at nationwideradiojm.com under staff by-lines, and listing SportsNation Live among its regular programmes.[1] [3] Anyone needing the station's launch year for a dated claim should seek it from the Broadcasting Commission's licensee record rather than from the outlet's own site, which does not state it.
Why does Nationwide News Network matter in Jamaica's sport?
Two things distinguish Nationwide among Jamaican sports outlets. The first is separate ownership: in a market where one group publishes both national newspapers it owns and runs the largest television and radio operation, Nationwide is a nationally distributed news service outside that group, and coverage there is a genuinely independent second Jamaican source.[4]
The second is that its sports desk covers the school and community layer of Jamaican sport as news. Jamaican athletics careers are made at the ISSA Boys' and Girls' Championships and Jamaican footballers at the Manning Cup and daCosta Cup, and Nationwide staffs those competitions with named reporters through the season rather than only at the finals.[3] For an athlete whose documented early record is a schools competition, a radio network that reports rural schoolboy fixtures and community basketball finals is often where the dated, attributable account of that record exists.[3]
