What is La Tercera?
La Tercera is a Chilean daily newspaper and news site. Its own Quiénes somos page names the publishing company as Copesa S.A. and describes the title as “75 años haciendo periodismo”, without printing a founding date; the same page links a code of ethics.[1] The claim of 75 years is the paper's own and is not adopted here as a founding date.
Reporters Without Borders names La Tercera, with El Mercurio, as “The main newspapers” in Chile, in a country file that also states that “Although the mass media seems to offer a degree of diversity, most of the outlets are owned by the same business groups”, and which places Chile 70th of 180 with a score of 60.84 in the 2026 Press Freedom Index.[2]
What does La Tercera cover?
Sport runs under a named brand on a path of the main site. El Deportivo, at latercera.com/canal/el-deportivo/, describes itself as “Toda la actualidad sobre Deportes en Chile y el mundo” and carries football in Chile and abroad alongside Formula One, tennis, rowing, shooting, triathlon, fencing and roller sports.[3] Because sport sits on a path rather than on a separate domain, the parent domain is the one recorded for this outlet.
Its sport reporting extends to the measurement of the domestic game. On 23 November 2024 La Tercera reported the Plan Estadio Seguro's attendance study for the 2024 Campeonato Nacional at 1,888,569 spectators, an average of 7,869 a match, an increase of 38.7 per cent on 2023 and the highest figure since 2012, when the state programme began measuring.[4] That report was published before the season's closing rounds, which the figure has to be read against.
The competitions covered include the Liga de Primera and the international fixtures of Chilean athletes and clubs. The channel's own listings at the date of retrieval carried Chilean under-20 football, Davis Cup tennis, European league football and the performances of Chilean players abroad, alongside rowing, shooting, fencing and triathlon.[3] The section operates within the title's subscription model.[3]
How large is La Tercera's audience?
The one measured, dated figure that could be retrieved is Comscore's. In its release of 31 January 2023 Comscore named latercera.com as the news-category site with the highest “promedio de minutos por visitante” in October 2022, and reported for the Chilean market as a whole a category penetration of “91,1%” and an average of “71.1 minutos al mes en sitios online de noticias”.[5] That is one month's reading for the engagement metric and a six-month window, May to October 2022, for the visitor ranking in the same release; it is not a current figure and Comscore published no unique-visitor total for the site in it.[5]
The same Comscore release sets the market context in which that engagement reading sits: a news and information category penetration of “91,1%”, second in Latin America behind Brazil, and an average time on online news sites that Comscore placed third in the region; the outlet Comscore names first in the category on unique visitors over May to October 2022 is BioBio Chile, not this one.[5]
No audited circulation figure for the printed edition could be retrieved: the Chilean circulation and readership validator's own site did not resolve to the body's content. Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and are not used here.
Since when has La Tercera existed?
The paper's own page gives no founding date. It states only “75 años haciendo periodismo”, which is a claim about duration made at an unstated date rather than a year of first publication.[1] No independent primary source for a founding date could be retrieved for this page, and none is asserted here.
What is documented is the publisher: Copesa S.A. appears as the razón social on the same page.[1]
Why does La Tercera matter in Chile's sport?
Two documented things put it on this list. The first is a standing, separately branded sports desk — El Deportivo — carrying Chilean and international sport under its own channel on the site.[3] The second is that it is one of the two newspapers RSF names as the main newspapers of a market RSF describes as concentrated in the hands of the same business groups.[2]
Its sport desk is also a route by which the state's own attendance measurement reaches the public record: the 2024 Plan Estadio Seguro study, with its total, its average and its comparison against 2012, was reported through it.[4]
