What is La Nación?
La Nación is a daily newspaper published in Asunción with a digital edition. Its own site organises its content under Política, País, Negocios, Estilo de vida, Editorial, Mundo, Investigación, Judiciales, Columnistas and Sociales, with sport carried under the Versus brand and further sub-brands for entertainment and a magazine.[1]
Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 country entry for Paraguay, writes that “four large companies — Grupo Cartes, Grupo Vierci, Grupo Zucolillo and Grupo Albavisión — control the traditional press and own most of the newspapers, radio stations and TV channels”, and adds that President Santiago Peña took office in August 2023 with the backing of the former president Horacio Cartes, “whose family owns many media outlets and businesses”.[2] RSF places Paraguay 88th of 180 countries in its 2026 index with a score of 54.67.[2] That is the monitor's own wording, reproduced rather than summarised.
What does La Nación cover?
It is a general daily, and its sport appears both inside the paper and under the Versus brand; the site's own navigation also carries an investigations section, a judicial section and a print-edition stream, so dated print-edition pieces appear online under their own headings.[1]
Its sports and business pages report the organisation of events. On 28 June 2025 it reported that Asunción had been selected to host the Juegos Escolares Sudamericanos of December 2025, quoting the minister of sport — “Paraguay presentó la postulación para ser sede de los Juegos Escolares Sudamericanos 2025, y nos confirmaron oficialmente que hemos sido elegidos” — and giving more than 1,500 athletes from twelve countries, organised with the Comité Olímpico Paraguayo and the Secretaría Nacional de Deportes.[3]
On 1 September 2025 it published an account of Tigo Paraguay's thirty-three years, dating the company to 1992 as Telecel, the Tigo brand to 2004 and the launch of the sports channel Tigo Sports to 2014.[4]
It also writes about sport as a political subject. On 14 May 2026 it published a print-edition piece putting the economic impact of the 2025 Junior Pan American Games at USD 431.3 million and criticising ABC Color's coverage of the same Games as a “doble discurso”; that figure and that characterisation are La Nación's, and are reported here as its own.[5]
How large is La Nación's audience?
No audited circulation or digital audience figure for La Nación could be retrieved for this page, and the outlet's own site carries no readership statement that could be retrieved.[1]
Reporters Without Borders' 2026 country entry gives a national index position — 88th of 180, score 54.67 — and describes the economic condition of the sector, including what it reports as a growing rate of job insecurity documented by labour unions, but publishes no outlet-level audience data.[2]
Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and no figure from one is given here.
Since when has La Nación existed?
No founding date for La Nación could be established from a source retrieved for this page. The outlet's own site carries no founding statement that could be retrieved, and the pages on it that were read are dated articles rather than institutional ones.[1]
What can be dated is current publication. Articles under the masthead were retrieved dated 28 June 2025, 1 September 2025 and 14 May 2026, the last in the print edition.[3][4][5]
Why does La Nación matter in Paraguay's sport?
It is the daily whose sport runs under a named sports brand, Versus, which is published on a domain of its own rather than on a path of the newspaper's site; the newspaper's navigation is the link between the two.[1]
Its reporting supplies dates that the state bodies' own sites do not publish in retrievable form — the selection of Asunción as host of the December 2025 school games among them, quoted from the minister of sport rather than paraphrased.[3] Its business pages carry the corporate history of the company that holds the football association's broadcast rights, which is where the 2014 launch date of that company's sports channel is stated.[4]
It is also a party to the public argument over the 2025 Junior Pan American Games rather than only a reporter of it, having published both an economic-impact figure for the Games and a criticism of another newspaper's coverage of them; both are its own statements and are attributed to it.[5] Reporters Without Borders' 2026 sentence naming Grupo Cartes among four companies it says control the traditional press is the dated ownership context for reading that.[2]
