What are the Junior Pan American Games?

The Junior Pan American Games are the continental youth games of the Americas — a full Olympic-style multi-sport event for the region's rising athletes, mostly under 23. The second edition, Asunción 2025, gathered 3,975 athletes from 41 nations across 28 sports.[1][2]

Who organizes the Junior Pan American Games?

Panam Sports, the continental association of the Americas' 41 National Olympic Committees, owns the Games and stages them with host organizing committees — the same structure as the senior Pan American Games.[1]

When and where are they held?

Every four years, in the year after the Summer Olympics. The first edition was held in Cali–Valle, Colombia in 2021; the second in Asunción, Paraguay, 9–23 August 2025.[1][2]

Since when do they exist?

Panam Sports created the Games to give the region's young athletes a continental pinnacle of their own; Cali–Valle 2021 was the inaugural edition.[1]

How do athletes qualify?

Entry runs through the National Olympic Committees within per-sport quotas and age limits (mostly U-23, varying by sport), with qualification built on junior continental championships and rankings. Crucially, success carries forward: in many sports, Junior Pan American Games champions earn direct berths or quota places for the following senior Pan American Games — Asunción 2025 winners secured places for Lima 2027.[1][3]

Why do the Junior Pan American Games matter?

They are the highest-level continental multi-sport title available to young athletes of the Americas, contested by full national teams and rewarded with senior Pan Am berths — a direct bridge into the senior international pathway. Medals at this event are national-team honors, not age-group club results.[1][2]

Who competes?

National youth teams of all 41 Panam Sports NOCs — nearly 4,000 athletes at Asunción 2025 — including world junior medalists and athletes already competing at senior international level.[2]
