What is Bild?

Bild is a German mass-market daily newspaper, published by Axel Springer, with a website at bild.de. Its sport coverage runs on three tracks: the sports pages of the daily paper, the sports sections of the website, and the separate weekly title SPORT BILD published in the same group. Media Impact, Axel Springer's advertising sales house, describes SPORT BILD's digital arm as the online portal of the group's sports magazine, covering the Bundesliga, Formula 1, the Champions League and international events including the Olympic Games, and describes a combined app bundling content from Bild, SPORT BILD and Bild am Sonntag with live tickers and statistics across football, motorsport and winter sport.[3]

The paper's form was set at the beginning. The Haus der Geschichte, holding the first edition in its collection, records that it appeared on 24 June 1952 from Axel Springer Verlag, characterised by large pictures and little text — große Bilder, wenig Text — and promoted by Springer as Germany's most modern newspaper; the museum notes that the combination of headline, article and photograph that became the paper's visual signature developed over the following months rather than appearing complete in the first issue.[1] The description of the paper as Germany's most modern was the publisher's promotional claim at launch.

What does Bild cover?

Bild is a general daily and its sport sits inside a wider news title rather than constituting it. Within sport the emphasis is domestic football, with transfer reporting, club news and Bundesliga match coverage; Media Impact names the Bundesliga, Formula 1, the Champions League and the Olympic Games among the properties covered by the group's sports output, and names football, motorsport and winter sport as the live-ticker categories in the combined app.[3]

SPORT BILD is the group's dedicated weekly sports title and is audited separately. The Verband Deutscher Sportjournalisten, reporting IVW figures on 21 October 2024, gave SPORT BILD sold circulation of 146,630 copies for the third quarter of 2024, down 9.3 per cent year on year, against 68,753 for the Monday edition of kicker and 62,196 for its Thursday edition.[4]

Media Impact publishes an audience profile for SPORT BILD that is demographic rather than volumetric: 76 per cent male and 24 per cent female, 52 per cent aged 20 to 49, 71 per cent in employment and 79 per cent in households with net income above €2,000.[3] Those are the sales house's own figures, and no measurement body is named against them on that page.

How large is Bild's audience?

Media Impact, which sells advertising for Axel Springer's titles, publishes figures for Bild attributed to three separate measurement systems. Print sold circulation is given as 922,991 copies for the second quarter of 2026, audited by IVW. Print reach is given as 5.80 million from the media analysis ma 2026 Pressemedien II. Digital reach is given as 5.66 million daily unique users and 25.30 million monthly unique users, and a guaranteed homepage reach of 21 million, all attributed to b4p 2025 I; the same page gives 45 million as the total reach across what it calls the Bild cosmos, on the b4p 2025 I basis for people aged 14 and over.[2]

IVW — the Informationsgemeinschaft zur Feststellung der Verbreitung von Werbeträgern — is the German body that audits the circulation of advertising media. In its release for the second quarter of 2026, dated 21 July 2026, it recorded 312 daily and 16 weekly newspapers, 437 consumer magazines and 631 specialist titles submitted for audit in that quarter.[5] The circulation figure above is therefore an audited one, reported by the publisher's own sales house; the reach figures come from the industry surveys ma and best for planning rather than from an audit.

No separate audited figure for the sport sections of the outlet's own website could be retrieved, so the digital figures above are for bild.de as a whole.

Since when has Bild existed?

The first edition appeared on 24 June 1952, published by Axel Springer Verlag.[1] The paper's sports coverage is as old as the paper, but the separate weekly sports title is much later; no source establishing the founding date of SPORT BILD could be retrieved, and it is therefore not stated here.

Founding and current corporate form are distinct. The title is published today within Axel Springer and marketed by Media Impact, the group's sales house, which is the source of the current circulation and reach figures above.[2] The 1952 date attaches to the newspaper, not to the present corporate structure around it.

Why does Bild matter in Germany's sport?

Scale, measured rather than asserted, is the first reason. An audited sold circulation of 922,991 copies for the second quarter of 2026 and a print reach of 5.80 million from ma 2026 Pressemedien II place its sports pages in front of a print audience far larger than that of the specialist German sports weeklies for which audited figures could be retrieved: SPORT BILD sold 146,630 copies in the third quarter of 2024, and kicker 68,753 and 62,196 for its Monday and Thursday editions in that same quarter.[2][4]

The second is the place a general daily occupies in a football culture. Transfer reporting, club governance stories and coaching changes reach a general readership through Bild rather than through a subscription broadcaster or a specialist magazine, and the paper's own live and digital products carry that material alongside the results service.[3] Its relationship with the clubs and federations it covers is that of a mass-market daily, and its published claims about its own reach are its sales house's, recorded above with their measurement sources and dates.[2]
