What is APA Sport?

APA Sport is the sports service of the Azerbaijani news agency APA, published on its own domain apasport.az rather than on a path of the parent site. The footer of that domain gives the publisher as APA GROUP and carries the line “© 2007 - 2026 Bütün müəllif hüquqları qorunur”.[1]

The parent's own about page gives the legal person as “Azəri-Press Agentliyi (APA) Məhdud Məsuliyyətli Cəmiyyəti” and describes the agency as “Azərbaycanda xəbərləri birbaşa Azərbaycan dilində operativ yayımlayan ilk müstəqil informasiya agentliyidir”, the first independent information agency to publish news promptly and directly in Azerbaijani. The same page characterises APA as “Azərbaycanın aparıcı informasiya və media istehsalı mərkəzi”; that is the agency's description of itself and is quoted, not adopted.[2] APA's own front page carries the copyright line “© 2004 - 2026” and lists editions in Azerbaijani, Russian, English, Persian and French.[3]

Azerbaijani media entities are recorded in the Media Reyestri, established under article 73.1 of the Law on Media and operated by the Media Agentliyi.[4] Reporters Without Borders ranks Azerbaijan 171st of 180 in its 2026 World Press Freedom Index with a score of 23.95 and opens its media-landscape text: “Virtually the entire media sector is under official control, and state-owned television is the most popular information source.” The sentence is quoted as published and RSF does not name this outlet in it.[5]

What does APA Sport cover?

The site's own navigation divides its output into football; a top-sports group covering basketball, volleyball, tennis and handball; a combat-sports group covering boxing, wrestling, taekwondo, judo and karate; a table-games group covering chess and table tennis; an athletics group covering weightlifting, track and field and gymnastics; and a further group covering rowing, canoeing and equestrian sport, alongside video and ranking features.[1] The combat-sports grouping matches where Olympedia's medals-by-sport table places most of Azerbaijan's Olympic record.

The parent agency describes apasport.az as its dedicated sports platform and lists football, athletics, Olympic coverage and combat sports among what it carries; it separately lists photo and video reporting, live broadcasts, an analytical blog, a business service and an archive it puts at more than 1.7 million articles.[2] Those figures are the agency's own.

A dated example of its reporting: on 11 June 2026 APA Sport published the broadcast arrangement for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Azerbaijan, 92 of the 104 matches live on İctimai Televiziya and twelve on CBC Sport.[6]

How large is APA Sport's audience?

No audited readership measurement for APA Sport could be retrieved for this page, and no recognised Azerbaijani measurement currency publishing figures for online news audiences was found. Traffic estimators are not audited measurement, so no estimate from one is given here.

The parent agency publishes figures about its own output rather than its audience: an archive it puts at more than 1.7 million articles and editions in five languages.[2][3] Those are attributed to APA and not adopted.

The only third-party statement about media reach in Azerbaijan retrieved here is RSF's, quoted above, which concerns state-owned television and does not name this outlet.[5]

Since when has APA Sport existed?

Two dates are on the record and they are not the same date. APA's own about page gives the parent agency's founding as 2004, and the parent's front page carries a copyright line beginning in that year.[2][3] The sports domain apasport.az carries a footer copyright line beginning in 2007.[1]

Neither line is a statement of a launch date, and no page of the outlet's own site stating when the sports service began publishing was retrieved. Both are reported here as the outlet's own publication data, and the parent's founding year is attributed to the parent rather than carried across to the sports service.[1][2]

Why does APA Sport matter in Azerbaijan's sport?

It is the sports desk of a general news agency, and that shows in what it publishes: broadcast and governance news as well as results. Its report of 11 June 2026 on the Azerbaijani television arrangement for the 2026 World Cup is the kind of dated record that fixes a carriage arrangement to a tournament.[6]

Its section structure gives combat sports — boxing, wrestling, taekwondo, judo and karate — a grouping of their own, which is where Olympedia's medals-by-sport table places the greater part of Azerbaijan's Olympic record.[1]

Ownership statements here are dated to what was retrieved on 23 September 2026: APA GROUP in the sports domain's footer, and the limited-liability company Azəri-Press Agentliyi (APA) in the parent's own account.[1][2] Registration of media entities runs through the Media Reyestri under article 73.1 of the Law on Media.[4]
