What is Agência Brasil?
Agência Brasil is the public news agency of the Empresa Brasil de Comunicação. Its about page, published on 22 September 2024, describes it as "uma agência pública de notícias que coloca a cidadania em pauta por meio do jornalismo digital", and states that, like EBC's other outlets, its mission is "criar e difundir conteúdos que contribuam para o desenvolvimento da consciência crítica das pessoas", prioritising coverage of public policy from the standpoint of the citizen, organised civil society and the executive, judicial and legislative branches.[1]
EBC itself was authorised by Lei nº 11.652 of 7 April 2008, which sets out the principles and objectives of the public broadcasting service and, in article 5, empowers the executive to constitute EBC as a public company linked to the Presidency to provide public radio and television services.[2]
The agency publishes at agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br, a subdomain of the EBC site, so the parent domain is recorded here. EBC's other outlets include Rádio Nacional, Rádio MEC, Radioagência Nacional, TV Brasil and TV Brasil Internacional, alongside the Agência Gov, Canal Gov and Rádio Gov services.[1] [3]
What does Agência Brasil cover?
It is a general news agency with sport as one of eleven standing desks, alongside culture, human rights, economy, education, general news, international, justice, environment, politics and health.[3]
The sports desk covers the national teams, domestic competition and Olympic sport. Items carried on the sports index in the week to 16 September 2026 included a Brazil squad announcement for friendlies in Asia, the women's under-20 World Cup, the CBF's announcement of women's national-team friendlies at 2027 World Cup venues, the women's Campeonato Brasileiro, the Copa Sul-Americana and the Copa Libertadores, the opening match of the South American men's volleyball championship, a judo Grand Slam with three Brazilian podiums, a Formula One result and an athletics title.[4]
The agency states that it publishes about 100 texts, images and graphics a day across all desks, factual, contextualised and service-oriented, that its editorial line and journalistic practice follow EBC's journalism manual, and that English and Spanish versions of the site carry translated selections.[1]
What are Agência Brasil's reach and standing?
Its reach is mostly indirect, and its own terms explain why. Reproduction is authorised for news media for journalistic purposes provided the source is credited, with corrections to already-altered material becoming the responsibility of the outlets that republished it; commercial reuse in books, audiovisual productions and product-linked social media is handled separately by EBC's licensing department.[1] Sports copy therefore circulates through other outlets under the Agência Brasil credit.
Its standing comes from statute rather than audience. EBC is a public company constituted under Lei nº 11.652 of 2008 and linked to the Presidency, and the law's stated principle is complementarity between the private, public and state broadcasting systems, with plurality of content production and distribution among its objectives.[2] The agency also publishes material from other EBC outlets and from partner agencies, and flags which of those items carry the same reproduction policy.[1]
No circulation or unique-visitor figure for Agência Brasil could be retrieved.
Since when?
The legal basis is dated precisely. Lei nº 11.652 was enacted on 7 April 2008 and took effect on publication, with the contribution provisions in its articles 32 and 33 applying from the following year; EBC was constituted under the authorisation in article 5, and Agência Brasil is one of the company's outlets.[2] [1]
The agency's own about page gives no founding date for Agência Brasil. Lei nº 11.652 of 7 April 2008 authorised the Empresa Brasil de Comunicação, the agency's present parent; it did not establish the agency, and a primary record of the agency's own founding could not be retrieved. The about page in its current form is dated 22 September 2024.[1] [2]
The sports desk is current and continuously updated: items on the sports index carried timestamps through 16 September 2026, and the agency lists offices in Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, São Luís and Tabatinga.[4] [3]
Why does Agência Brasil matter in Brazil's sport?
It is a Brazilian sports source that is neither a broadcaster nor a rights holder. Where ge, SporTV and TV Globo share one owner, and the competition rights sit with Globo and Disney, Agência Brasil reports the same events with no stake in their carriage, under a statutory public-service remit.[2]
Its reproduction policy makes it structurally useful. Any news outlet may republish its sports copy for journalistic purposes with attribution, so agency items appear well beyond its own site and under other mastheads.[1]
Its coverage also reaches sports the commercial market carries less of. In a single week of September 2026 the sports index ran the women's Campeonato Brasileiro, the women's under-20 World Cup, South American volleyball, a judo Grand Slam and an athletics title alongside the men's club competitions.[4] That mix follows from the remit rather than from an audience calculation: the agency's stated priority is public policy reported for the citizen, and its output is about 100 items a day across all eleven desks.[1] See Brazil and the Olympic Games.
