What sports are played in Belize?
The Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association lists 21 national federations and associations on its site and prints no total. They run from the Belize Athletic Association, the Belize Basketball Federation and the Belize Boxing Federation through the Belize National Cricket Association, the Cycling Federation of Belize and the Football Federation of Belize to the Belize Softball Federation, the Belize Volleyball Association, the Belize Weightlifting Federation and the Belize Sport Shooters Federation.[10]
The Directorate General for Foreign Trade, in a 2020 paper on sporting services, states: “Throughout the country, tournaments and competitions in various disciplines – football, basketball, volleyball, and cycling, among others- are organised regularly with participation of athletes and the engagement of sports fans.”[12]
Olympedia's narrative lists eight sports in which Belize's athletes have competed at the Olympic Games: track and field athletics, boxing, canoeing, cycling, judo, shooting, taekwondo and weightlifting.[1]
What is the most popular spectator sport in Belize?
No measured ranking of spectator sports in Belize, and no audited attendance or television-audience figure, was retrieved. The proxies available concern which sports receive public facilities and which run national leagues.
Facilities. Breaking Belize News reported on 21 January 2026 that the National Sports Council signed agreements with two federations: with the football federation for a FIFA-certified synthetic pitch at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan and further pitches elsewhere, and with the Belize Basketball Federation, in a memorandum of understanding, for the joint use and management of six courts.[14]
Leagues. Football and basketball both run national club competitions, the Premier League of Belize and the National Elite Basketball League.[15][17] These are different measures and are not a ranking.
How is sport organised in Belize?
The statute. The consolidated index of the Laws of Belize, published by the Attorney General's Ministry, lists “46 Sports Act” in Volume 3.[11] The ministry's laws search serves the Revised Edition 2020 of the substantive laws, but the text of Chapter 46 could not be retrieved from it. The Revised Edition 2000 of the Act, prepared by the Law Revision Commissioner and “showing the law as at 31st December, 2000”, was read instead; it records the Act as 31 of 1980, amended by 22 of 1996, in force from 20 December 1980. Section 5 establishes “The National Sports Council of Belize” as a body corporate, and section 6 provides: “The objects of the Council shall be- (a) to promote, develop and improve the knowledge and practice of sports in the interest of the social well-being of and the enjoyment of leisure by Belizeans and for this purpose to appoint Commissioners for all or any sport;”, followed by further objects.[33] Amendments after 2000 were not read. The Directorate General for Foreign Trade, in a paper dated 29 September 2020, states that the Sports Council was “formed 31 December 2000” and cites “Sports Act Chapter 46 Section 6 (a)” for its mandate.[12]
The National Sports Council. The Ministry of Tourism, Youth, Sports and Diaspora Relations lists the council among its bodies and states that it “functions as the principal agency responsible for the administration, development, and promotion of sports nationwide.”[13] The Directorate's 2020 paper gives it an annual budget of BZ$2.2 million and states: “With 26 sporting facilities, 110 staff, and management of primary school sporting tournaments country-wide, very little is left to adequately fund existing programmes or new programmes.”[12] Love FM reported on 3 September 2026 that Belize held a two-day National Sports Summit in Belize City, which it described as the country's first.[29]
Anti-doping. The same paper states: “In August 2018, the National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) in Belize was suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) because not enough was being done to combat doping in sports in Belize. The ban has since been lifted and an anti-doping office is housed at the Sports Council.”[12] WADA's own record of the decision and its lifting was not retrieved; the account is the Directorate's. NADO Belize's own site states that it “was formed in 2011 after the ratification of the International Convention for Doping in Sports on the 16th of December 2011”.[35] Greater Belize Media reported on 7 April 2026 that the National Anti-Doping Organization ran doping controls on top finishers and randomly selected riders at the 96th Holy Saturday cycling classic.[31]
The Olympic body. The Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association describes itself as “the National Olympic Committee representing Belize” and states that it “was founded in 1968 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the same year.”[9] Olympedia's narrative instead states that the country, as British Honduras, “formed a National Olympic Committee in 1967”.[1] Neither date is adopted here. The association's home page names the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games, the Central American Games, the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Games among the Games it covers.[8]
Football. Concacaf's member page states: “The Football Federation of Belize joined Concacaf in 1986, shortly after Central America's only majority English-speaking country declared full independence in 1981.”[3] FIFA's association page names the Football Federation of Belize and gives Concacaf as its confederation.[2] The Unión Centroamericana de Fútbol (UNCAF) lists seven member associations, Belize among them as “Belice”; its page for Belize prints “Año de fundación : 1980” and “Afiliado desde : 1986”, without saying to which body the affiliation date refers.[4][5] The federation's own site lists FIFA, Concacaf and UNCAF under its affiliations and prints no membership dates.[6] Its statutes page links a 2025 edition of the statutes, a PDF from which no text could be extracted.[7]
What are the main domestic leagues and competitions?
Football. The Football Federation of Belize's Club Licensing Regulations, 2020 Edition, adopted on 30 September 2020, apply under article 3.1 to “All Premier League of Belize Football/Sporting Clubs” and to “All Amateur First and Second Division Football Clubs”.[34] Breaking Belize News reported on 13 December 2025 that Verdes FC won the 2025–2026 Opening Championship, beating Progresso FC 1–0 in the second leg of the final in Benque Viejo.[15] The 2026–27 Opening Season was in progress on 26 September 2026: the San Pedro Sun reported San Pedro Pirates' opening 2–0 win over Progresso FC on 15 August 2026, and a 5–1 win over Benque United at the Ambergris Stadium on 19 September.[32][16] The federation's own home page, as retrieved, names its National Amateur League Championship, National Amateur Women's League, youth, futsal and beach-soccer competitions, but not the Premier League of Belize.[6]
Basketball. Amandala reported that the Belize City Defenders won the 2026 National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) championship on 17 July 2026, beating the Orange Walk Running Rebels 70–68 in game four to take the finals series 3–1.[17]
Cycling. The Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic is a road race from Belize City to San Ignacio and back. The Belize Tourism Board's event page gives the distance as 144 miles and describes the race as “the longest one-day cycling event in the Western Hemisphere”, which is the board's own characterisation.[18] Breaking Belize News dates the first edition to 1928 and published a list of winners.[19] Greater Belize Media reported that the 96th edition started at 6 a.m. on 4 April 2026 from Digi Park in Belize City.[20] Breaking Belize News reported on 23 January 2025 that the Cycling Federation of Belize's 2025 calendar of events included the 95th edition, on 19 April.[36] No site of the Cycling Federation of Belize could be retrieved, so the federation's own record was not read.
Softball. WBSC reported, in an undated article, that Team Beacon beat Play Chune Girls 5–2 in the final of the XXX National Women's Softball Championship at Rogers Stadium in Belize City.[21] Breaking Belize News reported on 24 July 2025 that the Belize Baseball Softball Federation had opened tryouts for national men's and women's teams to compete at the 2025 Central American Games in Guatemala.[22]
How has Belize performed at the Olympic Games?
All figures here are Olympedia's, from its country page for the code BIZ, read as rows. The page prints no Medals by Games table, no Medals by sport table and no totals row.[1]
Codes and names. Olympedia files the country's earlier appearances under the same code, BIZ, with the name British Honduras in its participation table. Its narrative reads: “As British Honduras, this country formed a National Olympic Committee in 1967, and made three Olympic appearances in 1968, 1972, and 1976. As Belize, it has been represented at all the Olympic Games beginning in 1984, after boycotting the 1980 Olympic Games.”[1]
Rows as British Honduras. In men, women and total athletes: 1968, 7, 0, 7; 1972, 1, 0, 1; 1976, 4, 0, 4.[1]
Rows as Belize. 1984, 11, 0, 11; 1988, 10, 0, 10; 1992, 9, 1, 10; 1996, 2, 3, 5; 2000, 1, 1, 2; 2004, 1, 1, 2; 2008, 3, 1, 4; 2012, 2, 1, 3; 2016, 2, 1, 3; 2020, 2, 1, 3; 2024, 1, 0, 1.[1]
Medals, Winter Games, 1906 and art. Olympedia's narrative states that Belize has never competed at the Olympic Winter Games and has not won an Olympic medal. The page lists no Winter Games row, no 1906 row and no art-competition row.[1] Youth Olympic Games rows are listed separately, for 2010 (3 athletes), 2014 (3) and 2018 (2), and are not Olympic Games rows.[1]
Which athletes and teams are internationally recognised?
Football. Concacaf's member page states that Belize “made the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2013, the only time the Golden Jaguars were able to land in the continental championship.”[3] That was the Concacaf Gold Cup of 2013. FIFA's association page records eight appearances by Belize in FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the latest for 2026.[2]
Olympic results. With no medal row, Olympedia's narrative names the performances it considers the best: “The best performances by a Belizean athlete are likely by Kenneth Medwood, who advanced to the semi-finals of the men's 400 metres hurdles in 2012, and Jonathan Williams, who had advanced to the semi-finals of the same event four years earlier.”[1] The “likely” is Olympedia's.
Volleyball. Breaking Belize News reported on 17 July 2026 that Belize's senior men's volleyball team beat Costa Rica 3–1 in San José to win the III AFECAVOL Men's Final Four Championship, and described it as the country's first senior men's volleyball gold; that account rests on this single report.[23]
Softball. WBSC's report describes the official who opened the women's championship as “a member of the 1972 Gold Medal Belize Team at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.” The year and venue are as WBSC prints them; no results record of the Games was retrieved.[21]
Basketball. Love FM reported on 27 July 2026 that Belize's under-20 men's basketball team beat Nicaragua in its opening group match at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.[24]
What major international competitions has Belize hosted?
No record of a multi-sport Games or a senior continental or world championship staged in Belize was retrieved from an awarding body.
Venues. The Directorate General for Foreign Trade stated in 2020: “Currently, two sporting facilities meet international standards: the CIVIC Centre in Belize City and ISIDORO BEATON in the City of Belmopan.”[12] Breaking Belize News reported on 21 January 2026 that a FIFA-certified synthetic pitch was to be installed at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium over six to eight months from procurement.[14]
The cycling classic. The Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic, staged in Belize, has international fields. Breaking Belize News's list of winners, published on 16 April 2025, lists Luis López of Honduras as the 2024 winner.[19] Love FM reported on 22 April 2025 that Jim Brown won the 95th edition, and Greater Belize Media reported that the British rider, for the Miami Blazers, won the 96th on 4 April 2026.[30][20]
What are Belize's main sporting rivalries?
No named rivalry was documented by a federation. The football records against the two neighbouring live pages come from a single secondary statistics site, 11v11, not from either federation.
Guatemala. 11v11 prints Belize's men's record as games won 0, drawn 4 and lost 9. Its list opens with a 2–1 Guatemalan win in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on 19 March 2000, and its latest entry is a 2–1 Guatemalan win in the Concacaf Nations League on 24 March 2023.[25]
Honduras. 11v11 prints the record as games won 0, drawn 0 and lost 8. Its list opens with a 5–1 Honduran win at the Copa Centroamericana on 19 March 1999, and its latest entry is a 1–0 Honduran win in a friendly on 22 January 2017.[26] These are Belize's side of the record as 11v11 prints it.
What is the role of school and university sport?
Primary schools. The Directorate General for Foreign Trade lists “management of primary school sporting tournaments country-wide” among the National Sports Council's responsibilities.[12]
High schools. Amandala reported on 7 July 2026 that the council organised what it called “the 1st ever Super Nationals High Schools Football Championships”, an under-17 boys' tournament between district teams played from 29 June to 3 July 2026 at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City, won by Belize District, 4–0 over Toledo District in the final.[27]
Regional school games. The San Pedro Sun reported on 18 September 2026 that Belize won nine medals, two gold, three silver and four bronze, in athletics and volleyball at the 22nd Central American Student Sports Games, CODICADER 2026, held from 4 to 13 September in Tegucigalpa.[28] The Directorate's 2020 paper states that Belize collaborates with CODICADER, the Central American Council of Sports and Recreation, to take part in Central American games.[12]
No publication of a national university sport body was retrieved.
Were any sports invented in Belize?
No federation, government instrument or standard reference retrieved claims that a sport was invented or codified in Belize.
The claims retrieved concern age and length, not origin. Breaking Belize News dates the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic to 1928, and the Belize Tourism Board describes it as “the longest one-day cycling event in the Western Hemisphere”; a Greater Belize Media report calls it what “is recognised as the ‘longest‑running cycling race in the Western Hemisphere’”, without naming who recognises it.[19][18][20] Those are the sources' own characterisations.
No provision declaring a national sport was found in the Revised Edition 2000 text of the Sports Act, Chapter 46; the Revised Edition 2020 text was not retrieved.[33][11]
