What is the World Baseball Classic?

The World Baseball Classic is baseball's world championship with major leaguers — run by MLB and the players' union under WBSC sanction, played every three-to-four years since 2006. Venezuela are the champions, beating the United States 3–2 at loanDepot Park in Miami on March 17, 2026 for their first title, Maikel García the tournament MVP.[1][2]

How do teams qualify?

Twenty teams: automatic places from the previous edition plus qualifier tournaments, with pools staged across the U.S., Asia and Latin America. Rosters are selected by national federations with MLB clubs' participation — making a Classic roster spot the sport's premier national-team credential.[1][3]

Since when does it exist?

Created in 2006 after baseball's Olympic exit; Japan lead with three titles (2006, 2009, 2023 — the Ohtani-Trout finale in Miami), the Dominican Republic swept 2013 unbeaten, the U.S. won 2017, and Venezuela's 2026 triumph made a sixth champion in six editions... five, in fact — Japan thrice.[2][4]

Why does it matter?

It is the only stage where the world's best baseball players wear national colors — its Miami finals have become festivals of the Latin American game, and Classic performances carry weight everywhere baseball is played.[2][4]
