What is the World Athletics Ultimate Championship?
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship is the sport's new season finale: a three-day, prime-time championship gathering the reigning Olympic and world champions, Diamond League winners and the world's top-ranked athletes — with a record $10 million prize fund, the largest in athletics history. The inaugural edition is set for Budapest, 11–13 September 2026.[1] [2]
How does it work and who qualifies?
Fields are small and elite — qualification is by achievement, not entry: automatic places for reigning Olympic champions, world champions and Diamond League final winners, with remaining spots filled from the World Rankings. Every event champion earns $150,000.[2] [3]
Why does it matter?
World Athletics has positioned the Ultimate Championship as the sport's biennial crown-the-best event in even years, opposite the World Championships cycle — its purse alone makes it the richest single competition in track and field, and qualification is by definition a statement of world-elite status.[1] [2]
