What are the UIPM World Championships?

Modern pentathlon's annual world titles, held since 1949 for men and 1981 for women, and contested at a single venue since 1993. They are now the world championships of a substantially different sport: since 2025 the five disciplines are fencing, obstacle, swimming and laser run, riding having been removed after seventy-six years.[1] [2]

How is it contested?

A qualification round and a fencing seeding round feed two semi-finals and a final of eighteen athletes each. The final opens with direct-elimination fencing, moves to a 70-metre, eight-obstacle head-to-head race, then a 200-metre freestyle, and closes with the laser run — five 600-metre laps broken by four shooting bouts, decided on a first-across-the-line finish.[2] [3]

How do athletes qualify?

By national quota. The UIPM allocates places to federations on continental and world ranking, up to a maximum of six athletes per nation for the strongest federations and fewer for the rest; athletes must then survive the qualification round to reach the eighteen-strong semi-finals.[2] [3]

Why does it matter?

Because the world championship is the only annual global title in a sport whose Olympic place was in doubt, and because Kaunas 2025 marked a genuine shift: Egypt's Moutaz Mohamed and Farida Khalil took both individual titles, the first African individual world champions in the sport's history, with Khalil simultaneously holding the junior, U19 and U17 world titles. The new-look format debuts at LA28.[1] [4]
