What are the Pan American Road Championships?
The Pan American Road Championships are the continental road cycling championships of the Americas, contested by national teams. The organising confederation, COPACI, lists them on its calendar as “Campeonato Continental / Continental Championship / Championnat Continental / RUTA – ROAD – ROUTE”; its English-language technical guide for 2025 calls them the Pan American Road Championships.[2][4] Two events are held in each category: an individual time trial and a road race. In 2023, 2025 and 2026 the categories were elite men, elite women, under-23 men, junior men and junior women, coded ME, WE, MU, MJ and WJ on COPACI’s event pages.[4][2] In 2025 the distances were set in laps of a circuit, from one lap for junior women in the time trial to sixteen for elite men in the road race.[4] The championships are one of several continental championships COPACI awards each year, one per discipline; track, mountain bike, BMX, gravel, para-cycling and masters have their own.[1]
Who organizes the Pan American Road Championships?
COPACI, the Confederación Panamericana de Ciclismo, awards each edition to a national federation and co-organises it with that federation. The event pages name both: the Federación Colombiana de Ciclismo and COPACI in 2026, the Federación Ciclista Uruguaya and COPACI in 2025, and the Federación Panameña de Ciclismo and COPACI in 2023.[2][3][6] The 2025 technical guide describes the arrangement as an event organised by the Uruguayan Cycling Federation, with COPACI’s support, under the regulations of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the world governing body.[4] The UCI’s rules apply to the racing; COPACI sanctions the event as a continental championship and places it on the continental calendar.
When and where is it held?
The championships are held once a year, in the first half of the year in recent editions — from April to May between 2022 and 2025, and in March in 2026 — and move between host countries. The 2021 edition was held in August in Santo Domingo. The most recent completed edition was held in Montería, Córdoba, Colombia, from 16 to 22 March 2026.[2] COPACI’s calendar as retrieved on 1 October 2026 names no host for 2027.[1]

Editions from 2021, as COPACI’s online calendar and event pages list them: host city and dates. The format column gives the edition number where COPACI’s documents print one.[7][8][9]
Since when do they exist?
COPACI’s technical guide for 2025 opens: “The 39th edition of the Pan American Road Championships 2025 will take place in the city of Punta del Este, Eastern Republic of Uruguay, from April 22 to 27, 2025.”[4] COPACI’s own history page states that the confederation was founded in Montevideo on 24 September 1922 and that it has organised annual Pan American championships, but it gives no year for the first road championships, and none could be established from another source.[5] The founding of the confederation, the first edition of the road championships and the confederation’s renaming from Confederación Americana de Ciclismo to Confederación Panamericana de Ciclismo, which COPACI places in 1958–1979, are three separate facts.[5]
How do riders qualify?
Entry is by national federation, not by individual qualification. The 2025 technical guide states: “All the National Federations members of the Continental Association, and they alone, may take part in the Continental Championship events.”[4] The same guide sets the quota per nation: “C.R.I.: 2 athletes per country / per category - Gender Male/Female” for the individual time trial, and “Road: 6 athletes per country / per Category - Gender Male/Female” for the road race, with technical support staff of up to six per category, to a maximum of 36 per country.[4] The categories open to entry are those the guide lists: “Elite Men (ME), Under 23 Men (MU), Junior Men (MJ), Elite Women (WE) and Junior Women (WJ)”.[4]
Why do they matter?
The measurable proxies are the event’s UCI classification and the size of the field. COPACI lists the championships in UCI class “C.C”, its designation for continental championships on the UCI calendar.[2][3] The official participants list for the 2026 edition records “NUMERO DE NACIONES 29” and “TOTAL DE PARTICIPANTES 284”.[10] Where Panam Sports uses COPACI’s championships for Games qualification, its qualification manual names the event: for the Asunción 2025 Junior Pan American Games, the cycling events the manual names include COPACI’s continental track championships in Paraguay (1–6 April 2025) and its cross-country championships in Costa Rica (26–27 April 2025).[11] The road cycling qualification system for the Lima 2027 Pan American Games could not be retrieved. No prize money is published in the 2025 technical guide.[4]
Who competes?
National teams from COPACI’s member federations, in five categories: elite men, elite women, under-23 men, junior men and junior women.[2] At Montería in 2026, the organiser’s official participants list counted 29 nations and 284 riders across the categories, with the time trials on 17 and 19 March and the road races from 20 to 22 March.[10] COPACI’s event pages for 2023, 2025 and 2026 list no under-23 women’s category, while its calendar listings for 2021, 2022 and 2024 include one.[3][7][8][9] Para-cycling has its own continental championships, held in 2026 in Indaiatuba, Brazil, from 25 February to 1 March.[12]
