What are the ISMF World Championships?

The world titles of ski mountaineering — climbing and descending mountains on skis against the clock — staged biennially in odd years by the International Ski Mountaineering Federation. The first official world championship was held at Serre Chevalier in 2002; Morgins 2025 was the thirteenth, drawing around 400 athletes from 25 nations.[1] [2]

What is contested?

Five senior events: the individual race over a long course of climbs and descents, the vertical race straight up, the sprint, the team race in pairs, and the mixed relay. Some editions add a long-distance event. Entry is by national federation and every competitor must hold a valid ISMF licence before registering for any World Cup or championship.[1] [3]

The Olympic breakthrough

Ski mountaineering made its Olympic debut at Milano Cortina 2026, with the sprint and mixed relay only, and the 2025 world championships doubled as the qualifier — sprint and mixed relay results there awarded Olympic quota places. The 2025 world sprint champions, Oriol Cardona Coll of Spain and Marianne Fatton of Switzerland, went on to become the first Olympic sprint champions, while France's Emily Harrop and Thibault Anselmet won the first mixed relay gold.[2] [4]
