What is artistic swimming?

Artistic swimming — known as synchronized swimming until 2017 — is a judged aquatic sport in which athletes perform choreographed routines of swimming, sculling, lifts and acrobatics to music, in solos, duets and teams of eight.[1] [2] It combines the athleticism of swimming with gymnastic difficulty and artistic performance, and has been an Olympic sport since Los Angeles 1984.[2]

How does artistic swimming work?

Competitions consist of technical and free routines (plus an acrobatic routine in team events at world level). Judging panels score execution, artistic impression and difficulty; under the system introduced in 2023, teams declare each routine's difficulty in advance, and scores combine declared difficulty with execution — much as in diving or gymnastics.[1] [3] Routines are swum to music played through underwater speakers, and athletes may not touch the bottom of the pool.[2]

Since Paris 2024, Olympic team rosters may include up to two men — the first Games with men eligible, though no federation selected one that year.[4] [5]

What are artistic swimming's origins?

The sport grew out of early twentieth-century "water ballet" exhibitions in North America and Europe, popularized on stage and screen by performers such as Annette Kellerman and Esther Williams. Competitive synchronized swimming organized in the United States and Canada in the mid-century, entered the World Championships in 1973 and the Olympic Games in 1984; the international federation renamed it artistic swimming in 2017.[2] [6]

Where is artistic swimming popular?

Russia dominated the sport for two decades, winning every Olympic duet and team title from 2000 through 2021. With Russia absent from recent Games, China has taken over at the top — winning both team and duet gold at Paris 2024, its first Olympic titles in the sport — ahead of the United States (team silver) and Spain.[7] [8] Japan, Ukraine, Canada, Mexico and Egypt are also established programs, with participation strongest across Europe, Asia and the Americas.[2] [7]

Who governs artistic swimming?

World Aquatics governs the sport globally — rules, judging standards, difficulty tables, world championships and rankings — with continental confederations such as European Aquatics running continental competition and national federations (e.g., USA Artistic Swimming) governing domestically and selecting national teams.[1] [9]

What are the most important competitions in artistic swimming?

How is artistic swimming awarded?

What is the college role in artistic swimming?

In the United States, artistic swimming is contested by varsity and club college programs at the annual USA Artistic Swimming Collegiate Championships — the sport's national college title, run by the federation rather than the NCAA. Programs such as Ohio State and Stanford have long traditions, and the collegiate route feeds the U.S. national team.[9]

Which media cover artistic swimming?

Coverage runs through the aquatic-sports press — SwimSwam and Swimming World both report on artistic swimming alongside swimming and diving — and through Olympic media, with Olympics.com and the Games' rights-holding broadcasters carrying the Olympic and World Championship events.[7] [11]

Who has won the most in artistic swimming?

Olympic artistic swimming (synchronised swimming until 2017) through Paris 2024, where men were eligible for the team event for the first time.
