What is the WPA?

The World Pool-Billiard Association is the world governing body for pocket billiards — founded in 1987, sanctioning the world championships and world rankings, and representing pool within the World Confederation of Billiards Sports and at the World Games.[1] [2]

Why does it matter?

WPA sanction is what makes a title a world title in pool — a meaningful distinction in a sport where private promoters run most of the money events.[2] [3]
