What is World Rugby?

World Rugby is the world governing body of rugby union — founded in 1886 as the International Rugby Football Board, headquartered in Dublin, and uniting more than 130 national unions across six regional associations.[1][2]

What does World Rugby govern?

The laws of the game; the men's and women's Rugby World Cups; the HSBC SVNS sevens series and Olympic sevens; the world rankings; the U20 championships and WXV; and from July 2026 the new Nations Cup, restructuring the international calendar into a true global league.[2][3]

When was it founded and who leads it?

Founded in 1886 by the unions of Scotland, Ireland and Wales; renamed World Rugby in 2014. Dr. Brett Robinson of Australia was elected chair in November 2024 — the first from the southern hemisphere — with the World Cup cycle through the USA 2031/2033 editions the center of his program.[1][4]

Why does World Rugby matter?

Every test cap, world ranking point and World Cup place runs through World Rugby and its member unions — its match records and rankings are the sport's primary documentation of standing at national-team level.[2][5]
