What is the Rugby World Cup?
The Rugby World Cup is the world championship of rugby union — the men's tournament every four years since 1987, the women's since 1991. South Africa are the men's holders and record champions with four titles (2023, Paris); England won the 2025 women's edition 33–13 over Canada before a record 81,000+ at Twickenham.[1] [2]
How do teams qualify?
The top nations qualify automatically by World Cup and rankings performance, with the remaining places decided through regional qualifiers and a final qualification tournament. Australia 2027 expands the men's field to 24 teams (October–November 2027); the women's tournament follows in Australia in 2029 — the first back-to-back World Cups in one nation — before the United States hosts in 2031 (men) and 2033 (women).[1] [3]
Since when does it exist?
First played in New Zealand and Australia in 1987, with the Webb Ellis Cup its trophy; New Zealand and South Africa have combined for seven of the ten men's titles, while England's Red Roses lead the women's honor roll.[1] [2]

Why does it matter?
It is among the largest sporting events on Earth — 2023 in France drew billions of viewers — and World Cup selection is the ultimate national-team credential in the sport. The American editions of 2031 and 2033 are set to be rugby's breakthrough moment in the United States.[2] [3]
