What is the ITA?

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is the governing body of U.S. college tennis and the coaches association of the sport — the dual authority for more than 2,000 men's and women's varsity teams at over 1,250 institutions across five levels of play: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, the NAIA and junior colleges.[1][2]

What does the ITA do?

It publishes the ITA College Tennis Rankings — covering some 20,000 varsity players, the official ladder of college tennis; confers All-America honors and national player, rookie and coach of the year awards in every division; runs its own championship calendar, headed by the ITA National Fall Championships and the National Team Indoor Championships; and maintains the ITA Hall of Fame.[1][3]

When was the ITA founded?

In 1956; it is headquartered in Tempe, Arizona.[1][2]

How are ITA honors earned?

ITA rankings are computed from head-to-head college results through the season; All-America honors in each division follow ranking position and performance at the national championships — objective, published criteria comparable to swimming's CSCAA system.[1][3] Top ITA-ranked players also earn direct professional entry through accelerator agreements with the professional tours.[2]

Why does the ITA matter?

Because the ITA is the recognized authority of college tennis, its rankings and All-America designations are the standard evidence of national-level excellence in the U.S. college game — the reference honors for a sport whose rosters are among the most international in college athletics.[1][2]
