What is the Federación Venezolana de Levantamiento de Pesas?
The Federación Venezolana de Levantamiento de Pesas is the national federation for weightlifting in Venezuela. The International Weightlifting Federation lists it under that name as its member for Venezuela, in the Pan American group, with the status “FM”.[2] The IWF defines a full member as “a Member Federation of a country as defined in the IWF Rule 5 of the Constitution and Rules entitled to full membership rights which are set out in rule 9”.[3]
The Comité Olímpico Venezolano includes the “Federación Venezolana de Levantamiento de Pesas” among the “Federaciones inscritas en el Comité Olímpico Venezolano”, with Luis Seijas as president and @fvlp_oficial as its contact handle.[1] The IWF’s entry gives the Twitter handle @fevepesas.[2]
Its legal form is set by Venezuelan sports law. The Ley Orgánica de Deporte, Actividad Física y Educación Física, signed on 15 August 2011, defines national sports federations as “entidades de derecho privado para la promoción y desarrollo del deporte y la actividad física con alcance y carácter nacional” (Article 48) — private-law bodies for the promotion and development of sport with national reach.[6]
What does the Federación Venezolana de Levantamiento de Pesas govern or do?
Article 49 of the 2011 sports law sets out the attributions of every Venezuelan national federation: to direct and supervise the activity of its discipline, to issue the technical and ethical norms of the discipline, to exercise disciplinary power, to promote the training and development of athletes, to organise competitions, to call up professional athletes for international representation, to recognise the members of national teams, to adopt its statutes and regulations, and to render public account of its management of funds.[6]
For weightlifting, the international body is the IWF, whose federations are organised by continent — Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and “PanAmerica”.[4] Full membership carries the rights that the IWF’s Constitution and Rules set out in rule 9.[3] Within that structure the Venezuelan federation is the IWF’s full member for Venezuela, listed with a president and a general secretary.[2]
When was the Federación Venezolana de Levantamiento de Pesas founded and where is it based?
The IWF’s member entry gives the federation’s address as a post-office box, Apartado 29032, in the Montalbán area of Caracas (postal code 1022), with telephone and telefax numbers.[2]
The same entry names “Prof. Luis Seijas” as president and “Prof. Henrry Velásquez” as general secretary.[2] The COV’s directory, consulted in October 2026, likewise lists Luis Seijas as president.[1]
The legal frame within which a Venezuelan federation is constituted is the 2011 sports law. Under its Article 48, a body’s “constitución y funcionamiento como federación deportiva nacional, deberá ser previamente autorizado por el Directorio del Instituto Nacional de Deportes” — its constitution and functioning as a national federation require the prior authorisation of the board of the Instituto Nacional de Deportes (IND).[6]
How is the Federación Venezolana de Levantamiento de Pesas recognised?
IWF. The International Weightlifting Federation lists Venezuela, code VEN, among the member federations of its Pan American group with the status “FM”, which its legend defines as a full member “entitled to full membership rights which are set out in rule 9” of the IWF Constitution and Rules.[3] Its member entry names the Federación Venezolana de Levantamiento de Pesas, with its officers and address.[2] The IWF groups its members by continent, and Venezuela’s group is “PanAmerica”.[4]
COV. The Comité Olímpico Venezolano includes the Federación Venezolana de Levantamiento de Pesas in its directory of national federations.[1]
Venezuelan state. Under Article 48 of the 2011 sports law, a national federation’s constitution and operation require the prior authorisation of the IND’s board.[6]
What does the Federación Venezolana de Levantamiento de Pesas organise?
The 2011 sports law assigns the organisation of competition and of national teams to the national federation. Article 49 gives each federation the attributions to organise the competitions of its discipline, to recognise the members of national teams, and to call up professional athletes for international representation.[6]
Internationally, the federation is Venezuela’s member of the IWF,[2] the body that stages the IWF World Weightlifting Championships. Its continental calendar sits in the IWF’s Pan American group: the IWF’s 2026 calendar listed the Pan-American Championships in Panama City from 27 April to 1 May 2026.[5] At home, it is one of the national federations inscribed with the COV.[1]
Who are its members?
The 2011 sports law sets the structure of membership. National federations “están constituidas por los integrantes de las asociaciones deportivas estadales” — they are made up of the members of the state sports associations (Article 48) — and the state associations are “entidades deportivas de derecho privado, integradas por los clubes para la promoción de una disciplina deportiva” (Article 44): private-law bodies made up of the clubs that promote a sport.[6] Under that law, membership runs from clubs through the state associations to the national federation.
The federation is in turn a member body. It is the IWF’s full member for Venezuela in the Pan American group,[3] and one of the federations listed by the Comité Olímpico Venezolano.[1]
