What is the FPJ?

The Federação Portuguesa de Judo (FPJ) is the body the International Judo Federation lists as its member for Portugal, under the name “Portuguese Judo Federation” and the code POR.[1] The federation describes itself as “uma pessoa colectiva de direito privado sem fins lucrativos dotada de Utilidade Pública Desportiva” — a private, non-profit legal person holding sporting public-utility status.[4]

The federation states its mission as follows: “A missão da Federação Portuguesa de Judo visa dirigir, promover e regulamentar a prática do Judo Kodokan em Portugal” — to direct, promote and regulate the practice of Kodokan judo in Portugal.[4] It says that it invests in areas including “a organização de competições nacionais e internacionais”, the organisation of national and international competitions.[4]

When was the FPJ founded and where is it based?

The federation states that it was “fundada em 28 de Outubro de 1959”.[4] It also states that it was recognised as an institution of public utility by a dispatch of 15 June 1978, under Decreto-Lei n.º 460/77.[4]

The International Judo Federation gives its address as Rua Alves Redol, nº 1, Lojas A/B, 2675-285 Odivelas, and lists Joaquim Pina as president.[1] The federation publishes the same Odivelas address on its own site.[3]
